So what is the point of stamping 668 then? to me that is if the factory stamped 668 and painted over it, is really the 668th car of the line not 670 as stated or if you wanted to get really technical on his theory should really be 1170-501= 669 not 670 like he is saying |

It may enter at the start of the process as body 668. Then it gets held up in paint or mechanicals and it drops back 2 places to the 670th body completed. If you look at the register you will see that most are out of sequence. The difference should be 500 in a perfect world. YG2S4 501 should have 2/06 001 |

The Body shop was managed separately and in a different building to the actual assembly of the cars, so this was why they had their own separate numbering system. The completed bodies were then moved to the car assembly building, and they might be loaded on the assembly line in a different order. The body number became irrelevant once assembly began and on many models it was deliberately hidden on the finished car. Also I think for the minis there were 2 parallel assembly lines so again this could effect the order they were completed and given the car number. My car was the 4391st body built but the 4290th car completed, so 11 cars of the same model were assembled ahead of mine. |

Out of interest, this was discussed recently in this thread - viewtopic.php?f=2&t=92454 An important part of that discussion (in my opinion) was the statement by Peter Davis in his book, repeated here. SMBD Body Stampings Bodies were stamped with a code by the Sheet Metal and Body Division at the end of the metal finishing line for internal tracking and a running cumulative total. The number was used within the body shop and not intended to be visible on the completed vehicle. It was positioned in diverse places, sch as (depending on the vehicle) the battery tray platform, bulkhead drain channel, behind the voltage regulator, or behind the final ID plate or compliance plate position. |
