Just replaced cones and knuckle and the swing arm will not move up enough to fit the new shock absorber. I am wondering if this is normal or are the trumpets too long. are there different lengths? TIA

Are the knuckle and cone properly seated all the way in? Did you remove all of the old knuckle joint nylon cup?

Some new cones sit higher than the old ones. Check what Timmy said first. You may need hilos. First I would put a jack under the arm and see if you can get it into the shocker then. See how high it rides, hilos are a good upgrade regardless.

Thanks for the reply. Knuckles are seated fully with 3mm clearance to the lip. cone seated properly, put a jack under arm but only goes so far then lifts body shell. I will let it sit and see if they settle. Graeme

Hi Graeme,
We put new cones in and even with hi lo's it's still sitting high, not wound all the way down (or up from hi lo perspective) but pretty close. Hasn't been out for a run yet though so its as installed.

PS. How's yours going. Getting close ?

PPS. Make sure you upgrade the steering rack if required before installing motor and all associated bits. I had to do the GT, what a job !

Geoff.

Maybe the use of the cone tool to compress the cone is needed to help put every thing back in

I think he's talking about the rear swing arm. Shouldn't need a compressor there. Hilos!!

Thanks all I have got them in. Had to undo swing arm and get the strut in then refit the swing arm. It does sit high but should settle a bit when it gets a bit of weight on it. I intend putting a new steering arm in and save any drama thanks 1978 clubbie. Starting to do the rebuild of front end now then motor then interior

Good to know you eventually got it to fit. Keep us posted on how you go with the front :)
