Hi all,

Trying to track down as many paint colours as possible that were used on the Australian Morris 850 (type YMA2S1). The many colour charts in the How To section are a fantastic resource, however these aren't specific to model.

So far there are 31 confirmed colours for the 850, as listed below (i.e. at least one 850 has been found for each of these).

If you know of a colour not already listed, I would be very keen to hear (specifically Australian factory colours as stamped on the ID plate).

Thanks,
Evan

Confirmed colours (in alphabetical order):
1. Acacia
2. Araluen Blue
3. Arctic Blue
4. Ash Grey
5. Astro Grey
6. Aztec Turquoise
7. Black
8. Cedar Green
9. Chartreuse
10. Cherry Red
11. Driftwood
12. Dusk Blue
13. English Grey
14. Haze Blue
15. Iceberg Blue
16. Inca Yellow
17. Nurburg White
18. Moss Green
19. Orient Red
20. Platinum
21. Porcelain Green
22. Royal Red
23. Saxon Green
24. Shadow Blue
25. Slate Grey
26. Smoke Grey
27. Sunburst Cream
28. Sunset Red
29. Tartan Red
30. Toga White
31. Twilight Grey

I posted a couple of BMC Dealer Bulletins showing colour availability in this discussion, about half-way through.

So is the Green referred to in this bulletin the green I am seeking for my 1968 Deluxe's interior?

Thank you for sharing those bulletins winabbey, they've proved very useful. If you ever come across any more we would certainly be interested to see them.

DavidE, the green vinyl referred to by the bulletins would be a patterned green vinyl for 1963 850s. For a 1968 Deluxe you would be after plain, solid-coloured vinyl, likely with narrow pleats (I don't have any photos for an example sorry).

I can't add any to the list, there is 8 colours you have that I didn't have. (I have some of them on other models and not 850s)

Thanks for having a look Morris 1100.

There's a few 64/65 colours I've seen on Vans/Deluxes that were possibly on 850s too, but haven't been able to confirm (e.g. Sand Beige, Ceramic Green, Dream Blue, Executive Grey, Marine Blue, Neutral Grey...)

The colours I haven't seen on the 850 are
Acacia (I'm pretty sure I have seen an 850 in this colour but it isn't in my files)
Chartreuse (seen on Morris Major)
Driftwood (seen on Morris Major)
Iceberg Blue (seen on Morris Cooper)
Moss Green (seen on Morris Cooper)
Orient Red
Royal Red
Slate Grey

If they were used on the 850 they are indeed rare!

I am after material, not made up sections which include the pleats. All such pieces are in good condition and have been cleaned and reinstalled. I want to re-do the rear parcel shelf, the top of the rear seat back, and the LHS dashcard. The colour material, which has a very fine and close grain pattern, is illustrated by the attached.

Morris 1100, you've certainly picked up the rarer colours. Out of interest...

Acacia and Moss Green are the only two colours I haven't been able to find details for either (have seen ~3 Acacia, but only one Moss Green)
Chartreuse - 1961, for cars roughly 3000-8000 (know of 7)
Driftwood - late '62/early '63, know of 3 cars around 20000-21000
Iceberg Blue - 1965, have only seen 1
Orient Red - 1961, one of the first four colours used on the 850, but only up to about car 5000 (know of 5).
Royal Red - 1965, again only seen 1
Slate Grey - 1964, only found 2

In contrast, from the cars I've found Shadow Blue and Saxon Green are by far the most popular colours.

David E, all the best for your material search. The grain may be the same as late 850?

850_Van, I will note that down thanks. There could easily be 850 sedans too, just have to find them!

My '61 850 original colour is chartreuse but not now. It doesnt have any compliance plates at all but the colour is printed on the original books I got with it, although seen better days. Would be nice to see a photo of a car in this colour if anybody has one

I have a 1964 850 in Moss Green, car number 50540.

1970minik, shame about the plate but great you got the books with it. I don't have any photos myself unfortunately, however Tony Self posted a great one on the VMCi Facebook page with two other 850s (Chartreuse in the middle) (here)

bruvy2002, thanks for sharing about your car, great to have definite confirmation on Moss Green. Is it still Moss Green?
