Whats the best way to identify a MK2 Cooper S gearbox There is the Casting Number But there are also other numbers stamped on the left hand side of the front of the gearbox Does anyone know what these numbers stand for |

The numbers that are stamped are the serial number and they will tell what the case originally was fitted to. It should have something like FAxE 1234 to be a genuine Mk2 case but it might have been rebuilt into a Mini K case with something like 5/12345. |

Here is the gearbox info I have 22G333 4 speed / 3 syncro / B type Remote shift 3 versions of the 22G333 casing. 22G333 X was for the later 970S and does not have the small cut out for crankshaft clearance in the front / radiator corner. Rubber Joints and 3.76 diff 22G333 Y was for very early 1275S's Rubber uni’s up to 9FSAY41233 and 3.44 diff 22G333 Q was the later casing used on most 1275S's Hardy Spicers from 9FSAY41234 and 3.44 diff Stamped Code 9FA is for the 970S , 12FA is for the 1275S 22G1128 4 Speed / 4 Syncro / Remote shift Stamped with following code Mini K = 1234 or 12345 or 5/12345 MK2 S = FAXE 1234 Clubman = 22/1234 Export Moke = 30/1234 Edit - This is a good source of info http://mk1-performance-conversions.co.uk/gearboxes.pdf |

You should be interested in the gear set as well. MK2 cooper S gear set varies from mini K set in two ways. Only the first motion shaft and Cluster gear are different. The First motion shaft should have 18 teeth to be MK2 cooper S as apposed to the mini K first motion shaft which has 17 teeth. The MK2 S first motion shaft also has a "S" stamped into the spigot bearing end of the shaft but can't be seen while the box is assembled. Note: There is also a later first motion shaft with 18 teeth but it takes a larger spigot bearing and requires a different main shaft. This is not a Cooper s part but is sometimes substituted for the original. It is not possible to tell the difference with the box assembled. The number stamped onto the Cluster gear must be 22G1040 to be MK2 cooper S. Of course the diff ratio is different too which should be 3.44:1 18 tooth pinion, 62 tooth crown wheel. Dave |

I've got some gearboxes with casings without a serial number? But with what would appear to be original cooper s gear sets. Does anyone know where these cases would have come from? Cheers Rod |

Cheers Rod Most New Gearbox casings did not have a serial number. I am sure of this, as back in the day Dealers in NSW had to note the serial number of any gearbox he sold New or second Hand, and at one time I purchased 700 brand new Gearbox cases at one time and not one had a serial number ( they are all Gone now ) I also noticed on some of the ex police cars I purchased did not have serial numbers, This I found out was because the gearbox case had been replaced usually because of damage caused by silent Cops |

Yes i was looking at the one on Gumtree and was trying to work out the number that is stamped into the case |

Going by that number it'd be from a mini K. A Mk2 S would also have Hardy Spicer driveshaft couplings, although these are easily swapped. That box is missing a couple of the shift linkages that live in the diff housing. |

I don't think so. It should have the threaded hole there with a blanking bolt but no switch. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=88074&hilit=reverse+switch |

Mine has the switch and the wiring diagram shows the switch fitted Can anyone provide solid evidence of this matter |
