Post subject:  Clutch slave cylinder hose removal problems-problem solved

Hi all,

Clutch went recently...rusty fluid leaking out of slave cylinder. Removed tube between master and slave cylinder and trying to get hose to slave cylinder off the large locking nut. Had to remove engine brace to get in there to have a look! Can't get any purchase to get the hose off the slave cylinder with it in attached the engine bay.

The hose is turning when I turn the locking nut, so tried putting bleed nipple with same thread to hold hose fitting while turned locking nut.....no go as scared will bust the nipple off in the thread.

The big problem is that there is a tab under the locking nut on the fixed bracket which is supposed to hold the hose so you can unscrew the locking nut, but the hose is just turning. Only idea I can think of is jack the car up, stick a bloody long screwdriver up from under the car to jam the hose nut and get a spanner on the top locking nut.....bloody hard to get to the hose where it goes through the bracket as the bracket has a lip around it.......

It looks impossible even to put a flare spanner on the hose fitting because of this lip...

Anyone with a brilliant idea or experience with this particular.....design complexity?

Use a pair of vice grips to firmly grip the crimp on the underside of the bracket. This will hold the hose still while you undo the lock nut.
Unbolt the slave cylinder to take the slave and hose off as a single part.

Thanks Mick,

May have to try that from under the car as heaps of pipes in the way, even with the engine steady off!

Will have a go in the next few days and report back.
Cheers!

Latest update for those who may be interested....

Tried the vice grips from the top after removing many pipes, etc.

Only succeeded in wrecking the hose and scratching the paint in the engine bay. Couldn't get a good enough grip on the hidden hose fitting.

Cut the f'n hose as it was rooted anyway now (and over 50 years old probably) and took out and cleaned out slave cylinder - reckon it just needs a kit as the bore is good.

Managed to wedge a screwdriver blade between the hose nut and the lip that was supposed to stop the nut turning but it was too hard to get it jammed in to stop it turning due to the limited space....will need to try from below with a BF screwdriver...what a PITA....

You might be able to make up a spanner from 3-4mm steel plate that will fit into the space required and if it turns will likely become lodged... You can buy a braided hose line straight from master cylinder to slave cylinder if you're interested.

Have you got enough crap out of the way to cut the nut with a small angle grinder?

Thanks guys,

I may be able to cut the nut off with a Dremel cutting wheel as I have cleared the area as much as easily possible, just a bit worried about sparks and petrol in that area......

Was thinking to make maybe half a spanner as mentioned by jon to jam between the hose nut and lip underneath bracket.

Will have a go tomorrow....just finished a very hard week at work and as much as I would like to get it done, am not quite in the mood to wrestle with the car tonight! :D

I don't know about 'jam', I guess the idea was to custom make a spanner that fits in the space you have...... as a once off mild steel should be ok if not too thin.

Once the hard pipe is off can't you use a socket?

Hi Doc,

Yep, have a socket on the big locking nut. The bottom hose fitting with the cut hose is the problem. I can't get a normal spanner over the nut fitting on the hose from underneath to stop the whole thing turning as the lip which is supposed to stop the hose nut turning doesn't as there a a gap.The gap is however, not big enough to get a normal spanner in between the nut and lip....

I need to stop the hose nut underneath turning, but have yet to make something to do that as have a trailer which is being re-done and running out of time on that!

Victory! :D

No way to get any sort of hold on lower hose nut due to the lip on the bracket and the brake union fitting nut being in the way and unremovable........

Ended up holding the lock nut with a ring spanner and drilling and dremeling the hose fitting out enough so that with the limited grip on the hose fitting underneath with small vicegrips, could unscrew the locking nut with the 15/16ths socket....

Saved the lock washer but......
