Just a question out there to those who may have done this before.

The original 998 engine in my deluxe was scrapped 30 years ago. Went to Sims Metals. I then got hold of a 1098, done some serious work (at the time) on it and had been on the road up intill 2000. Taken off the road for complete restoration. Currently looking at the engine as I plan to do a full refurbishment. Is it possible (legal ?) to shave the block enough to erase the current 1098 engine and restamp with original 998 engine number to get back to matching numbers with the I.D. plate. I know it's a strange ask but it does sound feasible.

Regards Burls.

Years ago I also thought this would be good idea .. only to be told by the shop building the engine that they were not allowed to.

You could always ask.... but i'd keep very quiet about the outcome

Cheers, Ian

How about why?

Unless you want to try to pass your car off as having its original engine to deceive others?

Sounds like something very not to do. So what do the engine rebuilders do when shaving blocks and the engine number is erased.

A good rebuilder will deck the block but leave the number pad alone, or get a number issued by police or transport dept. Many just restamp. No questions asked.

Stamp the same number back in, not a different one!

Thanks guys for putting me on the straight and narrow. The number I have is a VP number. Issued by Vic Roads when the original engine number was erased many moons ago before I got it. Just wanted to get back to an original Morris number. It's a good block but maybe now I may chase up another with an original Morris number. Thanks again guys.

If you want it purely for cosmetic reasons why not stamp a plate with the original numbers and stick it over or even rivet it on like the UK ones. Easily removed for inspections or resale

Na, don't want to deceive anyone, never been dishonest ever (the odd fib to the missus doesn't count), car will never be sold in my lifetime. I think I'll stick to being legal and find another block with at least a genuine BMC Morris engine number stamping.

Two different numbers mate a 998 starts with 99h and a 1098 starts with 1001 for the engine cc sizes

Id say listen to the bear
