Post subject:  Temporary adhesive for flares

Hey guys. I need to attach some flares temporarily until I can fit the ones I want. And I was hoping to just glue them on with some sort of goop that I could remove easily in a few weeks. Is there anything out there like that?

Maybe I'm better off with double sided tape?

Magnets?

Damn. That's a good idea. Wonder if it will pass a blue slip with them stuck on with magnets

What arches do you want to end up with?

Just the standard clubman S arches. Which I have but don't have the backing for just yet.

The temporary ones are the screw on type but if my memory serves me correct, I can just stick em on

I was going to suggest Sikaflex, but I just checked and it may be hard or impossible to get the remains of it off again as most solvents won't touch it once it is cured.

So... Don't use Sikaflex!!

I would suggest sticking them on with a bead of silicone though.

Tim.

What would I use to clean the silicone off?

A few little dabs of silicone. You really really don't need much - I wouldn't be doing a continuous bead in any case!

I'd cut or peel off as much as I could, then use either one of the silicone remover solvents like they sell in Bunnings etc. or Mineral Turpentine.

I'm assuming that it will be stuck onto a painted panel, so I wouldnt use anything like thinners, etc that might harm the paint. Turps on a rag that is damp/wet but not soaked will soften the cured silicone so it can be rubbed off. Slow and steady is the go.

Yeah, I'd only use as much as was needed to make sure it stayed there. It depends on the amount of surface area you have to work with on the flange of the flare, and how light the flare is. The heavier screw on types may need a bit more.

Might be worth giving the area of paint a polish before the silicone goes on too, to aid it peeling off easier rather than keying into the surface.

Masking tape, then silicon.

Why not use the double sided tape they use for badges these days?
It holds the side trim on most new cars anyway.

Hot glue gun?

Peels off really easy. Only chuck it where it needs and don overload it.

I'd use clear window silicone - would stick really well to the clean panel should peel off nicely...

I think I will go with silicone. Dab it on each point where the bolts should go. Should hold good enough :)
