Hi guys after a but of advice,

Just wondering if they will fir to my 850 easily and will it run better, or better of trying to organise a bigger engine and put the stuff on that?

Twin 1 1/2 SUs would be considered a bit big for an 850. They would suit a very warm 998cc upwards to 1275cc plus. SUs are variable jet carburettors, meaning the piston can rise and fall to adjust to some degree to the airflow demand of the engine, giving some flexibility, but even at full throttle, an 850 motor would only be using the first part of twin 1 1/2 capabilities.
The carbs would need a full rebuild to be sure they work effectively.

In the early days, some of the UK tuning firms offered twin H1 carburettors, i.e. 1 1/8".

According to the Mk1 Performance conversion website they were pretty good.
Quote:
...these carbs proved to be a real go faster goody. As with the similar Downton units they were originally designed for fitment to the small bore Austin Healey Sprites but proved just as successful on the smallest of all Minis. There are a few Minis still in circulation that are using this type of carb, either in conjunction with a larger 295 type cylinder head or offset rockers. My personal preference is for the rockers as using the 295 head can cause flat spots due to the comparatively large size of the inlet valves compared to the ports and venturi of the carb. Retaining the original 623, 850 cylinder head is also more "in keeping with the original specification.

I have set off a frogeye, and the matching Alexander manifold that I plan to put on my Traveller, eventually.

Tim

Twin HS2s work great on any 850, 998 or 1098. Twin HS4s I'd not use on anything under a hot 1098, for road use.
My mate swapped from twin HS2s to HS4s on his modded 1098 and was sorry he did it.
Twin HS4s are great on a warm 1275 though. :)
