How important would the M2-06 stamping on the radiator shroud be?
If car had a number on shroud that was approx. 500 from the one on the ID plate and engine num was same on ID plate and car number the same, and its on the Cooper S register on this forum, What's the likelihood that's its not a Cooper S?
If the front wing was replaced would it be correct to assume that that code would not be present?
Any information regarding would be appreciated

Is the Car No. on the ID plate also stamped just below the ID Plate in the firewall?

Its a nice thing to have but I wouldnt be that worried if that was the only thing missing from the S bits. All the other models had a code so if there is nothing means it may have been replaced, missed at the factory, cut out by a previous owner, hidden under paint still. Have you stripped the paint from the entire shroud? It was stamped in a few different places.

Hi phillb
The number on the plate is the same number stamped under the plate on the fire wall

Hi gtogreen1969
I have not stripped the paint back as I was told the panel was replaced some time ago

Are you enjoying the car? If so who cares what the tossers think.
Most of them spend their time in a safe automatic modern family sedan painted beige

I haven't yet bought said car. I know there are a lot of inconsistancies with these cars so as im trying to be a buyer beware and not pay too much for a car that's not what it claims to be. Just being cautious

When I bought my car I was in the same boat. the rad shroud looked really dodgy and the guard looked like it had been replaced. Even the number below the ID plate was very hard to read as there were many layers of paint.

Once i bought the car I was able to confirm the car number by cutting back the paint. I was sure the shroud would be a replacement but it turned out to be original also, ....so you never know.

At the end of the day the more "clues" you can tick off the list the better. If the stamping under the plate looks original (size and font) and the plate looks like it should (correctly stamped), then thats a good start.

It's all referenced here:
Cooper S Mk1 Register Link

Quote:
Body number prefix M2/06 followed by Body Number (sequential commencing at 001) stamped into the top of the radiator shroud. For internal use only during manufacture so may not be easily visible.

Thanks Timmy201 but there is nothing mentioned in the register about the guard stamping
Cheers

The stamping is on the top of the radiator shroud which is attached to the inner guard. If the car has been in a bad enough accident and inner guard was replaced the shroud would likely be replaced with it as a complete unit.

On the top of the radiator shroud of a mk1 s should be a M2 with 06 directly below. Nearby, often at a different angle will be a body number. The M2/06 is often very poorly stamped. On my car only the 2 and half the 6 are visible. As explained before these numbers and codes were used to track the bodies before final car assembly. They became irrelevant once the car was finished. On later models they started to hide these numbers (in drain channels or behind plates) probably to prevent any confusion.
