The Australian Mark 2 Cooper S Register is now live, and the Mark 1 Register was updated today.

Navigate to Board Index > Mini Registers > Australian Mk 2 Cooper S Register.

... or click this link viewtopic.php?f=46&t=90887

The Register for the Clubman GT will be added in the next month or so as time permits.

Feel free to provide comment and feedback in this thread. Hopefully additional vehicle data will be forthcoming, including from those who declined to provide it previously on the basis the register was seen to be in private hands and not viewable. Now it is out there in the public arena for the benefit of all Mini enthusiasts.

Enjoy. :)

Nice work.
Just a couple of things that may need looking at. The M2 06 code was actually changed to 2/06 and was located at either the drip channel or behind the master cylinders on the bulkhead.

Location of identifiers on the Australian Mark 2 Cooper S body:

• Car Type (YG2S4) and Car Number (sequential commencing at 501) stamped into the top of the radiator shroud.
• Body number prefix 2/06 followed by Body Number (sequential commencing at 001) initally stamped into the drip channel above the wiper motor then behind the master cylinders on the firewall bulkhead. For internal use only during manufacture so may not be easily visible.
• From January 1970 an ADR (Australian Design Rules) Compliance Plate fixed to the vertical face of the crossmember behind the power brake booster. Two styles of plate were used - initially square plates secured with four rivets, then rectangular plates secured with two rivets (see photos below).

Note: Unlike the Mark 1 Cooper S, no ID plate was used during Mark 2 Cooper S production.

Thanks. Narrative updated. Was M2 06 used on any Mark 2's?

Mine too, so that makes three car's ID's confirmed. :)

I have info of a dozen or so stampings and they are all 2/06. The stampings were first located in the drain channel then around 5/1970 they went to behind the master cylinders usually under the colour stickers. I can't pinpoint the exact date as my last gutter stamping is 4/1970 and then firewall stampings start at 6/1970

Doug
I have just emailed you another 60 cars that are not on your list. Some of the info is incomplete but you should be able to get something to add to the register.

Interestingly, my (old) Sept 1970 MK II S had numbers stamped in the gutter. I had to remove the paint to see them but they were definitely there. I don't know if they were stamped on the firewall as well. I'll check my current Sept car when bodywork repairs are underway.

Following input from several knowledgeable people the description and location of identifiers section has been updated.

I just had a look at my old posts and this one has a 2 photos of the 2/06 behind the master cylinders. I think simon k , kyoda , bmacpiper, Gezo and Peten Soaf have firewall stampings on there cars.

Ok , thanks for all the input and advice.
Will check out all the other indicators for sure.
Would also be interested to know if any other 7/70
plates exist without the "/"

There is a good indicator if you can find the 2/06 body build code. A 7/70 Mk2 Cooper S had this stamped on the firewall bulkhead behind the master cylinders. It was usually above the speedo binnacle nut and hidden under the paint sticker. Worth a look anyway. During my research I have found that during the middle of 1970 the 2/06 stamping moved from the passenger side drain channel and then moved back again later the same year.

The change over from the front hand stamped to the rear machine stamped was 8/70, between car 2311 and 2344.

Hmm, got me thinking, maybe there was a change over in the stamping codes prior to the MK2 because my late MK1 doesn't seem to have an M on the radiator shroud, just the 2 above 06. I thought maybe a bad stamping angle caused this but could it be they stopped using the M earlier?

Yours would have had the M. I have photos of these body numbers after yours (4291, 4639, 4690, 4921) and they all have M2-06.

Here is a selection of M2-06 photos. As you can see some of them the M is hard to read.

Excellent photos, thanks for uploading, shows my stamping bloke must have had the stamp on an angle so it didn't imprint the metal. Also rules out my theory so good to know. Cheers.
