Just slide the fan off the spindle, it just presses on.

Thanks Morris

I'll give it a good go. I was a bit hesitant using too much force in case there was something holding it in.

Cheers

I'd just watch the plastic fan after 40+ years the plastic could be brittle and break

re your question about flap seal material, when I did up my `matic heater I used closed cell foam on it. it's about 6mm thick.

Thanks guys.

Will take care with the fan (gently, gently).

Cell foam sounds the go.

I used circlip pliers to remove the metal clip from the fan first as this is the thing holding it tight. it is a tedious job to remove it but patience is your friend. clean the shaft with some emery paper and spray with some wd40 or similar before removing the fan.

More questions :)

The heater core seems to have foam (?) wrapped around its body. What is its purpose and is it a special material (heat resistant etc)?

The heater core foam is to minimize the potential of the air to flow around the core instead of through it, but also to help locate the core in the heater box. There is probably more benefits that I've forgotten too.
