Yes, I tried the Penrite Classic Mini oil for 3 consecutive changes. I always change my oil at 4,500 kms. And whilst I generally don't join "The Great Oil Debate", here is my experience...

With the Valvoline my car will cold start and idle at 72psi.
Once warm, it will idle at 50psi, and running at 3,000 RPM I will see 70psi.
This is very consistent, regardless of outside temperature, distance driven, or number of KMs since last oil change.

With the Penrite Classic Mini, the car will cold start and idle around 85psi.
Once warm, it idles around 43psi, and running at 3,000 RPM I will see 58psi.
After a good stint of freeway driving (45 minutes +), the car will idle at 35psi, and at 3,000 RPM I'll be lucky to get 50psi.

I can't comment on the protection or lubrication characteristics of either oil. However, I really dislike these huge swings in pressure and inconsistent operation of the Penrite oil, and will therefore never use it again (especially when the Valvoline can be had for $10).

(*All numbers +/- 3psi. Readings taken from a mechanical Smiths gauge.)

I run Gulf Western XP 20w50
It happily sat on GR's dyno at 75~psi
It will hold 65-75psi depending how hot it is when on the freeeway and i get about 35-40psi when idling.

If stocking up for use in a Classic mini,
VALVOLINE XLD CLASSIC 20w-50 is the one to use.
The "Classic" has the ZINC required for the Flat Tappet cam in a classic Mini.
The "PREMIUM" is not the right choice for the Classic Mini.

I have tried the Premium and it made the engine rattle a bit and the oil pressure dropped. I dumped it out after 1 week.

That's the thread i based my oil choice on.
As classic was being phased out and premium was as good if not better.

I tried the gulf western xp 20w50 last change and found it very good, very similar to the valvline xld classic. I got some of the cheap xld premium so it will be interesting to see if I find the same as GTOgreen1969.

The premium still has the zinc according to valvoline, see second page of thread quoted above. It's funny the classic took a long time to phase out.

Gulf Western 20w50 fixed my old Mazda rattly hydraulic lifters, especially when hot. Put it down to better oil pressure. It's made in Australia and got good results from GR so you can't get a better recommendation than that.

I'm spending a small fortune on my mini engine rebuild so it's Gulf Western for me, and it's not that much dearer anyway.

I think the issue was that my engine was a little tired and the Premium cleaned it out too much.

So far the XLD premium is behaving similar to the old XLD Classic and Gulf western in my motor. It's a shame they are both only 4 litre.
