Post subject:  Mk 2 S Sound deadening
Can anyone help me with photos of what the sound deadening is meant to look like in the boot of a Mk2 S? Its been 20 years since I've pulled it apart and cant remember what it looks like. Is it the same material that's used on the roof and under the carpets? Ignore the butchered speaker holes. Still cant decide whether I should repair or not.

I can't answer your question on the sound deadening but I would assume it would have been the same as the dash matting being vinyl covered.
Your centre rear shelf centre hole looks exactly like my car which was ex police was yours ex police?

Yes it is same stuff but the heshian side is sprayed black.

I would need to double check thickness though (Im on holidays so cant check the one from my GT).

Away for another 1.5wk. So if noone replies will check for you.

As Bubba mentioned they seemed to spray it with something on the hessian side to stiffen it or keep it from fraying.

Hi Brian,

That speaker hole is not a feature of NSW Police S's so it's just a co-incidence if it is present on such cars. I'm assured by several ex-Police who drove the Cooper S that they were not allowed to have a commercial radio in the car, except if the car was without an AWA Police band two-way radio, in which case they had an AM radio tuned in to the local station for commentary on weather or incidents. Of course some bent the rules and installed a portable AM radio with aerial that clipped on the gutter, easily removed when a station inspection was carried out. The speaker for the AWA two-way radio was built into the unit which fitted under the passenger side dash. So ex-Police vehicles should have an intact rear parcel shelf.

Thanks everyone for your responses. Bubba, totally forgot to check out my GT but had a look and its long gone. Also don't recall any police features. Thanks for the photo phillb. Exactly what I was looking for. With Wild willy help should get it looking correct.

I bought the car from a car yard in Warragul Vic in about 89. Only driven for a short time before I pulled it off the road and had it "Professionally restored" The boot is a good indication of their work. Anyone know of this car, registered DEP558 when I bought it. Someone had installed Clubman tail lights at some stage. Photos below as bought.

I am reasonably sure the Black is a flame retardant

Thanks to super sleuth Morris 1100 who found the part number (HYA1151) in the Mini Clubman parts book PUB1052. The Clubman GT had the same rear shelf insulation as the Cooper S.

According to the engineering drawing the first use was on the Mini Cooper back in 1962. The material specified is rubber backed felt - 1/2" thick, although it's possible the material was changed over time and the drawing not updated.

Not my car but I have another photo of another car and it's the same just hanging down around the edges. What ever is sprayed on it's only light. The boot floor had a similar material fitted in the Cooper S and also inside the boot lid.

Thickness appears same as carpet under felt. Probably same just sprayed with a coating.

I glued hessian to new felt underlay and sprayed the hessian black ( vinyl spray) to get a similar effect.

This afternoon I had an insulation epiphany. :shock:

I thought it would be good if we had an unmolested Cooper S to check insulation examples against. My car is a very original 1970 Cooper S but I dismissed it as the mat is missing from under the rear shelf. But then I remembered there were some "spares" that came with the car. I checked a box and, sure enough, the insulation piece was there. :)

I've posted some pictures below (with brick paver background). An Ausmini member friend asked me to post pictures of his MK II Cooper S mat (timber deck background).
