recently I drove from Melbourne to Bali with NO rear brakes! The hoses looked fine from the outside but had completely closed up inside. Even with full pedal pressure, not a drop of fluid.. I always thought the brakes were average but the pedal was firm so I put it down to 50 year old technology and unboosted discs. The handbrake worked well so it didnt occur to me the rears weren't operating hydraulically. After replacing the hoses, the difference is startling. I know the rears are only supposed to contribute a small percentage of braking effort but with them working the braking effort is so much improved. I've only ever driven my own car so I simply didnt know any better.. Check/ replace those hoses! |

They're in a tight little spot in behind the swing arms, no wonder they go for years without being checked, and decades without being replaced.... Not my favorite job, but once they're done they're done. Bali? Ballarat? |

Er, Bali Indonesia. Drove Melbourne to Perth to Darwin. Shipped to Dili in East Timor. Then drove to Kupang Indonesia. After that roll on roll off ferry to Flores. Drive thru Flores then ferry to Sumbawa and so on to Lombok then Bali. Great trip, lovely people, scenery and generally the roads. |

Have a feeling in hindsight they were original hoses. The car was very original when I started on it 2 years ago. I should have known better, I was deceived by the outward appearance of the hoses. Lesson learnt.. |

I hope you have photos of the tip, How did the mini drive in the hot humid areas? I replaced an original brake hose from my moke a few months ago as the back left line had completely closed up. New hoses in and it stops really well. |

car was fine, didnt miss a beat, not even a puncture. No overheating issues at all. Scraped the muffler off twice in Indonesia, one time descending into a pothole on a goat track after missing a turn in Flores the other exiting a ferry in driving rain. Solved that issue by scrapping the muffler and getting a hotdog welded on. Bit noisy but it definitely goes better and more ground clearance. Might not be legal in Oz, we'll see when I get back there... |

Good pick-up...dodged a bullet there I was once following an old dunger of a Holden, I think a Quey, at 80 Km/hr (what was I thinking!  ) ....immediately that his put the brakes on for a right turn, he speared off left into the scrub about 50 metres...I went in to check he was OK and sure enough...the boot was sloshing around in brake fluid...he had been "working" on the brakes...a miracle he weren't kilt. Took us ages to get the diff off the tree trunk he had run over to get the wheels back on the deck |
