I am about to (when I find a spare moment!) to replace the clutch plates on my 74 leyland...
Just wondering if anyone has any tips to make this a quick, easy job?

Pay someone else to do it.

I could but I do know people that are experienced with clutches but not front wheel drives and especially minis!

dont have the money either!

be Prepared to pull the engine out - The flywheel is normally a beeatch to get off !!

What makes the fly wheel hard to get out? are you refering to the age of it, meaning that it hasnt been taken in and out?
Is there enough room to remove the housing from the gearbox while its still in the car?

There are a few issues with changing the clutch.
1. The clutch housing has bolts that are essetially cornered by the engine and the firewall. Commonly referred to as bastard bolts. They will come of 1/2 a flat at a time. The way to get around this is to leave them out when you install the engine. Not the best for saftey and you can be pulled up on it when trying to get a pink slip.
2. The flywheel, if you don't have a puller then dont start trying. You will also need a bloody big socket(can't remember the size off the top of my head) and a breaker bar. Again you you don't have these the don't try it.
3. Once you get it all off you have to make sure that you get it all back in the same way.

Best thing to do is make sure it is at TDC this will make things easier. Mark the flywheel and everything else that comes off. This way you can be sure you won't develop a vibration in the engine.

Last one i did took about an hour, but i had all the right tools and a friendly flywheel, most arn't, that the bit that can keep you at it for days.

I have done mine in the car I found that if you undo the Bottom engine mout and the top one if you have one. The engine can be lifted with a jack under the gear box to allow enought room to undo the bottom 3 Bolts. When the cover is off cut slots in the 3 hard bolts positions so that when you put the cover back on you do not have to try and get those bloody bolts back in.

The cover should just slip over them.

As said above if you do not have the right tools do not attempt changing it.
