i was testing the mini on the weekend, just driving around in a circle.. (listening for a specific tyre sound)

anyway after i stopped i noticed some fuel on the ground, it was obviously from me but it only happened when i was going fast, when i was driving slow or moderate it didnt do anything. this explains the massive fuel usage when i drive it hard, i thought it was simply coz i was driving it hard because i could never smell fuel. it wasn't coming out of the petrol cap, it only had half a tank and the cap and the side of the car was all dry.

im thinking there's a small leak in the line somewhere, which only leaks when a lot of fuel is being pumped through. it's an electric fuel pump mounted at the back of the car just under the fuel tank on the underside of the car. i dont think the leak is at the actual pump, coz i've checked it out before when it was over the pits.

Anyway i was gonna have a look at the lines in the next few days, and i was wondering if anyone has had this problem before, sorta give me a head start . I was also thinking of just converting back to a mechanical fuel pump, hopefully to remove this, also the low end power bog, and that freakin pumping noise . Anyone got any idea about mechanical fuel pumps vs electric? also any info u might have would be great.

Before you go over the lines check the float chamber cover - if the fuel level rises significantly, even if nothing is clogged it still wouldnt go down and fuel would just keep leaking through the breather hole at the top of the chamber cover. To fix just dismantle, clean and take some fuel out.

As far as I know electric fuel pumps have been proven for decades and are far superior to the mini mechanical ones especialy if youre running a high performance motor. If you can still hear the whirring pump noise (or a boeing 747 crashing into the building nextdoor for that matter) with your engine on, I'd like to have a chat to you on the amazing sound deadening work in your engine bay.

By the looks of your message its coming from the rear of the Mini. I would be checking the Lines and possible they need renewing. While your under thier check that you have a fuel filter before the pump. This will help the pump and Carb to not get dirt in your system

hopefully tonight i'll sus it out, i'll check all the joints. so it's unlikely that it's an actual hole in the hose or anything? maybe its worthwhile changing the hosing over.

and yes my car is quiet at idle, and at most of the rev range (and when it's noisy it's a wicked sound so i dont mind it being loud ), so the electric fuel pump noise is driving me insane.
