Hi, are there any options to change the globes lighting the speedo in a roundy to some brighter leds or equivalent without changing the bulb holders?

I think the bulbs that are in them std are 2.5w, you can get 5w at most auto acc. shop

Try cleaning the connections for the globe holder and also the earth, they might be dull due to poor connections and earths.

Also check that the switch.

If you change to LED's don't change the blue ignition one. It'll stop the alternator charging :shock:
Sounds a bit odd but I've done it and now need to pull the dash out to swap it over :roll:

Original Bulbs in Mini speedo and Gauges were std 2.2 Watt. Changing them to Higher wattage bulbs will cause problems as the heat will be greater especially with the cardboard tubes for the speedo warming lights. "Fire Hazard". You can try some new type LED bulbs but make sure the light they emit is spreading to the right direction as some of them are not suitable for dashboard illumination as they do not spread the light. Make sure the RED Alternator warning light remains a 2.2w incandescent bulb other wise the Alternator will not excite and charge as it requires the bulb's current dray to initiate the charge process.

Ignition light on early speedos is red not blue, one of its wires is brown/yellow and the other green?
As Tony said, it provides excitation to the Lucas alternator so it'll start charging. No bulb worky = no chargy.

[edit] the blue one is high beam.

Hi Tony

Any idea of a brand or where to get the LEDs. I only want to replace the illumination lights not the warning ones. Cheers James

I changed my dash lights over to led’s not so long ago….

The temp and oil gauges had wedge bulb holders…..on my car…so I end up getting these from jaycar for two bucks each http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=ZD0390

For the speedo……I ended up cleaning out the glass and guts of the screw in bulb and fitting the wedge led in and soldered it together…….. I just pulled the wire straight and used the soldering iron to melt the end of the led to fit the base of screw bulb.
With a bit of hot melt glue push the whole lot together ….let it set, then just soldered the wires to the base.

They fitted my Australian speedo in length…….but I ended up getting a English speedo with miles and kilometres………which turned out to not as deep as my other one……and the home made bulbs where to long.

I ended up finding some led garden bulbs from bunnings that have around five or six leds in them……..the fit the hole at the back of the speedo perfect….
I just soldered wire from the garden leds to the glass bulb screw base and earthed out the holder with some wire…..
The garden light leds are hpm brand…….and cost twenty dollars for two, they have a white base and a plastic lens thing that pulls off.

I bought 2.2W bulbs from Karcraft.
After buying screw in leds and finding they didn't spread the light, as Tony said previously..!

Remember that LED lights MUST have a resistor in series, to limit the current to about 20mA.
LED bulb replacement lamps from Jaycar, Narva etc have the resistor already, but if you make your own you will have to add a resistor. LED lights are also very white, and don't quite look right in an old car.
I fitted 5 watt incandescents to my spot lights as DRL's to give the same yellow as the sealed beam headlights; looks right.
