So now I feel really stupid, I have a feeling that the bloke that I bought my mini off has told me a lie, the engine number on the block is 99HE22 108412, does that make it a 998 engine not a 1275. The chassis number is 021 D2S2M10/8955, what does that mean? |

unfortunately thats what it looks like. According to my info its a 998 A+ block with dished pistons. The chassis number refers to a 998 leyland mini sedan. What does anyone else think? Maybe the guy you bought it off had been told the same thing. Guess it just pays to check everything out before buying a mini. Hope this helps. ash |

Thats why when you buy a car get them to write you out a receipt with a comprehensive listing of everything they say is in it, the ammount you paid for it, their statement that no money is owed on the car etc. Plus isnt there a week long cool off period when you can return a car (even private sale) as ong as it wasnt an auction? |

it still could be a 1275, i know of a couple that have been stamped with the orignal engine number for the car, ie 99h, so they wouldnt need to pay more for insurance and disc brakes. check if it has the two removable covers on the back of the engine or not, and count the number of head bolts. hope this helps |

Cooper S had the normal 9 head studs, plus an extra one at the back, and a bolt at the front (ie. one each end of rocker cover) Another easy way to check is the heater outlet- if the flange on back of head is mounted at an angle it's a 1275, if mounted square to head its a 998 or 1098 (or 850...!). As posted above, yes it's illegal, but some people have been known to alter the engine number to avoid fitting discs, or getting inspection for engine change.... ![]() |
