Hey Guys,

I know there have been a lot of these posts but I'm just trying to work out exactly what I have as I have found some odd bits and pieces whilst stripping the car back.

Can anyone shed some light?

My 850, number 10131, has a number behind the plate that doesn't match anything on the plate; something used in the body manufacturing?

However, it was Cherry Red under the plate, and yours isn't - but it looks fairly original to me. Looking at your other photos in other posts, I would have thought there'd be Cherry Red on the inside underneath the underlay stuff on the front dash/wheel arch area, yours looked almost Saxon Green.
Of course, things can change over fifty years! Does the body have '13863' stamped anywhere on the firewall? Perhaps a number on rear floorpans?

Sorry if any of this has already been discussed, I have been closely following every thread.

EDIT: I haven't been closely following every thread. Sorry!

Evan.

The only number I have found is the one under the ID plate. The paint I seem to have found is a really light grey. I'll see if I find any more numbers when it comes back from the blaster

From what I'm reading that body number should definately be on the ID plate. I want to know if that number on the body is an 850 number

A body that is pre-1965 with a number that high must be an 850, as not that many 997-998 Coopers were built and there were no other models then.

I'll check the radiator shroud but is there anywhere else I can look for clues?

Look above the wiper motor, in the rain gutter of the scuttle panel, the manufacturing body number should be in there under the paint. But this is NOT the number you want for registration.

[edit] no it isn't there, I was thinking about the Mini K in another thread...
This manufacturing body number would be on the rad shroud for an 850...

I an not really an expert on 850 numbers but I am learning a little more all the time, from what I have seen I think the car number should be just above the id plate at the time that car was built. A year or so later and the number was just below the plate.

So clean that black gunk off and it should be there.

You can see the number above the plate in the photo (the car number that matches the plate)

I assume yours would be there too?!

my 850 is in the same boat, plate on the right of the speedo hole, and the number behind the plate does not match on the plate plus i have no other numbers on my firewall either,
only other number on mine is 6206 after the body number this 6206 is also stampted on the passenger side rear floor near where the seat frame rests on the floor

Doc my 850 does not have any stamping on the shroud at all.

early 850's are all over the place as far as correct data

Sports 850 would know

Grant

My plate is to the left of the speedo hole (opposite to this picture) and the only number so far was under it. I'm going to check the shroud and rain gutter tomorrow.

Amazing how much they varied!

I don't think it will be on the shroud, they didn't do that till later, the gutter was only stamped from mid 69 when they stopped fitting the ID plate...

Hang on a minute.... is there another pair of holes above where the ID plate was? Or on the other side of the speedo hole?

I have a theory... A couple of things have just added up.
