Something I've always wondered about. Everyone says that the big bore blocks are taller to make up for the longer stroke of the 1275, but the 1098 has a longer stroke than the 1275, and gets away with the standard height small bore block. Presumably its something to do with the size of the big ends or the shape of the crank webs or something?

In the case of the 1098, it's the Pistons. The Gudgon pin is closer to the crown than a 998, 'cause in the case of the 1098 block, remember that it is the same block as the 998.
With the 1071, it has a shorter block and different pistons to the 1275, while the 970 uses (It appears) the same pistons as the 1071 but a longer con rod.
