Hi all

I'm looking at a thick flange Cooper S block and would like to know if it has been decked and if so by how much :?:

Is there a measurement of block height (ie, gearbox mounting face to head mounting face) as standard :?:

What amount can be safely taken off :?:

Cheers
Steve

I have one here with .4" removed. It would still; be usable by fitting correct deck height pistons in it and them play around with rocker shaft height to get the geometry correct. I have done this many times using pistons from Jap cars.

I just measured one now. 8.872" from Sump Rail to Deck face - that's a Cooper S 1275 Block.

Remeber that they essentually used the same block on the 970, 1071 and 1275 engines. To make up for the longer stoke of the 1275 engine they had an extra 'lump' on the deck face and so are 3/8" (a whisker under 10 mm) taller than the smaller capacity units.

So, certainly taking 0.375" off the deck would be no worries at all and Tony ^ has taken 0.4" off one, but I say be careful going much past that.

Something I've always wondered about. Everyone says that the big bore blocks are taller to make up for the longer stroke of the 1275, but the 1098 has a longer stroke than the 1275, and gets away with the standard height small bore block. Presumably its something to do with the size of the big ends or the shape of the crank webs or something?

In the case of the 1098, it's the Pistons. The Gudgon pin is closer to the crown than a 998, 'cause in the case of the 1098 block, remember that it is the same block as the 998.

With the 1071, it has a shorter block and different pistons to the 1275, while the 970 uses (It appears) the same pistons as the 1071 but a longer con rod.
