My engine is out, and my master cylinder was busted before i removed it. So i want to make sure that mechanically, the clutch is good to go before i put the engine back in.

How do i do that without being able to operate it?

hmmm, short answer is "I wouldn't try"

The least agressive way to test it is to screw the 7/16 adjuster bolt out until the clutch releases. The bolt mightn't be long enough - nothing to stop you putting a longer one in though, just don't let it scrape the flywheel

however, you *could* put your jack handle on the clutch arm and pull on it, or you *could* put a scissor jack between the flywheel housing and the arm. But the chances of breaking something are quite high

edit: or if you have a working master cylinder and pedal box, you could rig up a bench test if you were really keen

hmm, so i guess i'll just have to hope for the best once the engine go's back in.

My two cents is that you can visually inspect the clutch while it is out. Pull the cover off and remove the flywheel to inspect the plate, the faces, the throwout bearing and the primary seal condition.

The arm and the clevis pins can be checked while the engine is out, but they can also be checked when the engine is in as well. The chance to inspect the clutch and seal is one that only really comes along when the engine is out. After these have been checked and certified as good condition, then the operation of the clutch will be ensured. Make sure the condition of the parts are OK, and leave the rest to Alec Issigonis.

and don't forget to fit a new 3/W-5/8 thrust bearing, not one of those poo 7/W-5/8 thrusts that last 5 minutes
