I am wiring up an alternator with a internal regulator. The large top terminal I have put it on the main battery terminal at the solenoid. The bottom terminal to earth & the middle terminal I presume goes to the warning light. The problem is there is power at the warning light constant when the battery is hooked up

You may need to be a bit more specific.... Those 3 connections, how are they labeled?

The Alternator will be grounded through the mounting of it to the block. The large B+ terminal will go to the Solenoid as you have stated. Do you have a D+ terminal of DF terminal?

The bottom terminal (the small one) is the d+ which goes to the warning light. The other two are the wide b+ terminals which are the same, and go to the power supply. The alternator is grounded through it's mounting points. I'm assuming this is a lucas (or similar).

If you had the warning light hooked to the b+, this would turn on the warning light, I think.

Just reading again, do you not have the small terminal? If not, you can just leave it unplugged, but you won't know if your alternator dies.

I can't see any terminal markings. There is a plastic cover that is missing that clips over the wires I presume that it named the terminals. When I pulled the alternator off a couple of years ago I left the wires on the back. The one I have put to earth was a very short wire with a large terminal on it so it could only be bolted to the mounting bolt I presumed. I guess mainly I need to know should there be power coming out the other terminal when the large one is hooked up to the solenoid. If it shouldn't have power there it must be a problem with the alternator.

Perhaps I will just run the wire for the warning light and when I get it going sort it out then

After a bit more research I think the last persons wiring has stuffed me up. From what I can work out the two large spade terminals are both live & the small terminal goes to the warning light.

One will probably be the main charge terminal, the other will be a 12v sense wire and the 3rd will go to the CHG light.

The following pages from the Lucas Australia Alternator manual may help. I'm guessing yours is a 14ACR or 15ACR.
