Post subject:  Exhaust Lingo

So been doing a bit of research for a new exhaust system and I would like to clarify a couple of the confusing exhaust terms.

-What is an LCB manifold? Difference to 3-1?
-What is a DTM exhaust (just double exhaust exits)
-What size engine would be required for a 'bigbore LCB'?

Ive got twin (unknown size) SUs, 1310cc block, (soon to fit 1.5 roller rockers). What would be the best setup? I pulled a 2 inch stainless steel system made by Redback Exhausts off my car. Not sure what the manifold is as I havent removed that yet.

Sorry if these questions are silly, just hoping to clear a few things up.

LCB is short for Long Centre Branch, where the pipe from the middle exhaust port on the head reaches down to under the car and joins the other two in a Y. I believe the LCB can only be fitted if you run Pot joint unis?

3 into 1 is where all three pipes meet behind the engine, but for big bore race engines you can also get a 3-1 where all three meet under the car

a 3 - 2 - 1 is like a shorter version of an LCB The outside ports join first, then the middle pipe joins these two before going under the car.

It's easier with pics.

Check out the minisport website, they have a decent selection where you can see all the types, and the recommended engine sizes for each.

Other than the above, I'v used a 3 into 1 and LCBs on 1100 Motor and like the LCB. Never used a 32 1 so cant comment on it. The Big Bore you could get away with a 1310 and the DTM is a Brand of Muffler

The Maniflow 3-2-1s like in that pic are called a freeflow. They do tend to break where the top pipes join, except on remote box cars.

A little real world experience -- I swapped the first kind (Perry 3-1) for the third (Maniflow LCB), both 1-3/4" on my warm 1152 and the difference was marked, both in terms of power increase and aural pleasure ;)

I couldn't imagine putting anything other than an LCB on a road-going 1275...

I've run the freeflow (3-2-1 above... maybe a MCB? Medium Centre branch?) for some years on a well modded 1030cc and it was a really good performer.

& yes doc it was a remote car ;)

cheers

DTM is a reference to the style of exhausts used in the German Touring Car Championships:

I thought that the LCB style was designed more for road (better for torque in the middle of the rev range) and that the 3 to 1 was designed more for race applications (peak power way up the rev range). but I'm no expert and look forward to being corrected.

Most people tend to recommend an LCB set of extracotrs with an RC40 exhaust but each to their own.
