Well it seems for some currently unjustified reason my mini has had a heart attack. Was running 'ok' last week but went to drive it on monday and it was seriously fouled. Thought that was a little strange so i cleaned the plugs and tried again. Same thing. New plugs and pulled all the spark components down for a look. Cleaned the dizzy, set points gap, tdc and button alignment and checked all the leads had good contact. Still no life. Had a coil pack there so i checked that but not the issue. I adjusted the timing again but still no luck.

So at the moment i can get it to idle, VERY rough, <500 rpm and only at full throttle. Anything different including timing and she stalls immediately.

Anybody experienced anything like this? Or know what ive got wrong?

Theres no need to have a go at me, i dont really know what im doing and im WELL aware of that, but if you have some info that might help im desparate to have this thing running properly and your assistance will be GREATLY appreciated.

Cheers
Callin

It may pay to check if the piston holding the needle in the bell housing is stuck up in the chamber.
I had that happen once in mine and it produced similar results. also check if the choke is stuck as well and the jet is able to move freely

Check the dashpot fluid (atf dextron 3 is fine) make sure the piston in the dash pot moves freely, there is a spring loaded pin on one side to check this. The coil may not like to be put under load but operate okish at idle so iyt maybe on its way out.

After checking all of the above (dead possum included if you wish), I'd ask yourself about the history of the fuel. How much in the tank, when did you last fill up etc. I'm wondering if it may be stale or contaminated fuel you've picked up shortly before it went bad?

I've also been told Singer sewing machine oil is almost exactly the same as the correct SU oil, plus its a nice convenient bottle for top ups.

I've always found giving SU's a good clean and service, checking the jet is centred, checking everything works smoothly esp the piston falls down with a nice soft click, makes a huge difference to the reliability and consistancy of the engine.

Well the other day Ian came round to have a squiz at the old girl, and yes it was the dashpot. Didnt realise the center did move on it when i looked at it..... but lesson learned lol

So fixed that, set the timing, changed the plugs, set the idle and away she went! :) Ended up driving her to wantirna and back, no hassels.

ALTHOUGH all is not well, cyl 3 has now dropped out, didnt have time to check why coz i needed my other car anyway. Also it used a good litre of oil and dumped a whole lot overnight again below the diff. Couldnt see properly but i dont think it was coming out any higher. Not to mention this oil is filthy! And its all new

Im guessing worn diff and seals for the oil and well really whole motor sound had. I cant afford a rebuilt or replacement atm :(

Could it be fuel leaking past rings on no. 3 into sump? Oil & petrol mixed is very thin and could leak out? Had this problem once on a 4 stroke ride on. Just a thought. Does the oil that has leaked smell like petrol?
