Follow the cable down the back of the engine bay with your arm and undo it as best you can. With a single carb and the air cleaner off, its not so bad. You can have a go at it from below, but this is much harder as you need to get your wrist around a bend in the subframe.

If you can't get that big knurled nut undone by hand, it's easier to undo the 7/16 bolt and take the boss off.

give it a really good clean before you start, look at it with a mirror and a torch so you can see what you're up against

got the cable in.you 2 must have small arms,i couldn`t get mine down far enough.i ended up taking the drive shaft ? out at the pot joint & accessing it through the sub frame.

my speedo still didn`t work & the old cable looks fine.

i can spin the cable at the speedo end, is this right ? cable is all the way in.

cheers

nope, means it's either not pushed in far enough, or the drive has rounded itself - pull the boss off and take the drive out

Sorry to hijack your thread
But is this the same system as the older mini's too.
the removable boss i mean
As my speedo cable won't come out of my gearbox. the nut thing is undone but it seems to be siezed in there.

So as was already asked, how does one undo the boss????

My bet is the speedo drive gear is spinning on the shaft. Have to get the 7/16th bolt out, remove the cover, and lift out the speedo drive gear/shaft.

I thought a pic might help. This is what you are playing with.
You can take out the 7/16th AF bolt and withdraw the assembly. But I think the problem might likely be that the cable has not located into the square shaped hole you can see in the image.

How many different lengths of speedo cable are there? One for clubby and one for roundy????

I have a couple of examples where the square thing is now round, caused by the cable not being far enough in and wearing it out. I'd expect the only way it wasn't far enough in was because someone didn't do up the knurled nut properly at both ends

I think there are 3 cables Hanra, roundie, early clubman with a screw on to the speedo, and late clubman with a clip on to the speedo

a clubman one is really long compared to a roundie - like about an extra foot. A roundie one the right length tucks neatly up behind the exhaust and straight into the speedo

If I had one I'd measure....

Im gunna have a hunt through my receipts. Mines to long, it fouls on the exhaust. Ive always wanted to remove it but when I fitted the motor, I ensured the cable was nice and tight by screwing it up with some multi grips... I never realized I could just remove the entire boss assy and get it out that way!!!!
