hi can i ask: 1. what fuel youre using for your mini, 2. do you care about what fuel you put in it, 3. whats a nice range for the consumption to be. thanks. i use BP Ultimate, i really feel the difference, more power, a more solid acceleration, better starting first time. i care about what i put in him, i dont drive him that much so i fill up about $15 twice every 3 weeks. my fuel consumption is about 9L/100km or 32miles/gallon. with winter in now, my choke is used and im guessing fuel consumption will rise. |

I run only BP Ultimate or Mobil 8000, with Flashlube. I don't have unleaded seats- the exhaust valves are too big... 
I tried some `black bottle' Nitro octane booster- stops running-on but I got less power. Goes harder without it. Waste of $$, I reckon. Consumption? Who cares.. I got 2 tanks, and it's going harder since I rejetted the Dellorto.

I run BP Ultimate. Ran it plain for about 10 months and have started to add a dose of Lucas 'Lead Replacer' to each tank for the last couple of months. dewey |

Erm, Guys, I may be only a young brit, but why are you sticking additives in your cars? There are companies like Lubrizol, who you will have never heard of who spend millions of $$s every year getting the balance of additives in fuels just right to look after your cars. The only one thats even worth using is the lead additive if you havent got hardened valve seats. The rest are pointless. As an example I completed my final year university project with Lubrizols assistance on a problem some OEM's (who i cant name - big ones!) were having with their diesel cars. Lubrizol paid for UK£150,000 of testing for me... which was nice! Lubrizol supply additives to BP and all the other major fuel and oil sellers. infact chances are every vehicle you own has some Lubrizol additive technology in it, this company turns over somewhere around US$5billion per year supplying additives. So why mess with the delicate chemistry that they spend so much money researching and perfecting, and approving??? It's a waste of your money! Hybrid... |

I ran my son's car (1132 Clubbie) for 6 months with straight unleaded fuel. Head was reconditioned but stock. When I then pulled the head off to put a big valve one on, I found all the exhaust seats were rooted. No other word for it. The hot exhaust valves (running without any lead replacement additive) had microwelded to the cast iron `seats' and pulled bits of metal out. My road car has a 1310 running oversize valves and no inserts. I've used Flashlube in it for years. When I pulled it off 3 weeks ago to fit valve stem seals, all the seats were clean, after 30,000 miles. Lubrizol make great OIL additive packs and supply most of the oil companies. I know this as a friend has worked there many years (still there!) But we are talking fuel- and unleaded is very dry and has no lead replacement additives. ULP? I find it's crap- octane rating is all over the place, and it fills the plugs etc with brown gunk. Flashlube is $16/Litre, and you only add 1 mL per litre of fuel. So it adds only 1.6c/L to your fuel cost. Works for me!

As for the Mini, not sure...hasnt had the run around yet. For the trueno is use Mobil 8000 only because the BP nearby doesnt have ultimate. Im not a fan of Optimax personally. Problem is even 98 RON is enough for the damn thing...........i should really have the ecu re-tuned to make do with the Aussie fuel(the japs get the good stuff), but instead i just stick in octane booster. Ive found it does add a few k's per litre, AND the car runs a little smoother. There was an article in ZOOM i think a while back which had dyno read outs of the same car testing different batches of fuel with different octance boost additives to check if they really work in terms of 'hp'. Some did actually improve readouts. Winner was Nulon Octance booster from memory. |

I run Shell Optimax, cause I get the 4c off thing from Coles. Squirt some flashlude in at the same time for save the zorst seats. |

I use whatever fuel comes out of the hose at the shop. It always costs to much, but as long as it doesn't root my mini i don't care what type it is. And then the Mini eats too much fuel too quickly. |

Hiyas, I use Leaded (or which ever Lead replacement fuel is available at the servo).. I fill it to the top every week. Haven't really noticed any difference with the different types of fuels yet, but I'll be on the look out now and report back, sounds interesting. Last I filled was Monday, it was $1.07 a litre in Melbourne, and I spent around $22 litres. I use my choke quite often. |

I have started to use BP ultimate in the 1992 Cooper. but it has recently been cantancerus when cold but that may other issues. Used to use Optomax in the clubbie with a bit of Fash lube & it went well for what it was. |

i have found the shell optimax to be the best, followed closely by the mobil 8000, then the bp premium. the safeways premium ulp is absolutly shocking, my mini pinged its head of when i was forced to use it (ran out of fuel had to) , my subaru liberty rs turbo ran like a dog the first time i used it, so i swore never to use it again, i always use flash lube, when filling up. not worth the risk of killing the expensive head. cheers steve |

Safeways is Woolworths up here in NSW. Before they got in bed with Caltex they bought up the Liberty sites. Their fuel was crap then too. Rumoured to come from Indonesia, maybe still does..

A mechanic mate of mine found a lot of cars coming in with clogged up fuel filters. When asked, all the owners admitted to filling up with either Woolworths petrol or Gull petrol. Hmmm, maybe its just a coincidence? I run Shell Optimax with flashlube. It runs fine, better running than LRP. Haven't ever tried anything else (at least on my current motor). I trust my local Shell coz they have stickers that say 'No ethanol' and a few years ago I read an article on LRP that said that Shell were the only people to state what lead replacement stuff they used (valvemaster or something?). Doesn't matter anymore, I stopped using LRP. Anto. |
