Post subject:  Brakes...

hey peeps.. i was having a look online for mini brake setups..

now im trying to decide which to go for.. bearing in mind i do have S brakes at the moment

7.5 upgrade.. 4 spot alloy calipers.. $666.66

8.4 upgrade... 4 spot vented calipers, vented dilled slotted rotors, new hubs/ pads and braided lines.. $850.00

i need to get new rotors if i keep 7.5's caus emine are already about 6.5m wide, lol...

has anyone had any previous encounters with either setup?

im pretty keen on the 8.4's , i have 12s so wont be a hassle..
:)
thanks

If looking at 4 pot alloy ones, I've heard the MiniSport ones are NFG because they flex..!

There was a thread on this on MS/MM board recently.

I have S brakes on 2 Minis- no way I would swap 'em for Mini 8.4s.. my 3rd one has Honda Civics now.. a mere coupla hundred $$ :P

My current S setup, the booster has a split the size of a  and doesnt hold vacuum at all..

im going to take my mini off the road asap.. and im going to finally get stuck into this suzuki conversion.. me just started an aprenticeship as a mechanic, i have 2 bosses.. father and son, and another bloke, who are more than willing to help me out with it..

but yeah still trying to decide which brakes...

BTW whats wrong with the 8.4 vented drilled slotted setup? how can they be worse than solic 7.5's?

i cant keep my current setup, and im honestly not happy with them either.. my drums were better personally

thanks again :)

by Suzuki do you mean the GTI engine transplant?

I remember reading a while ago on www.twincamturbo.com that to get this mod approved you'd need a twin circuit brake system. You might have one already, but its food for thought.

I don't see the 8.4s being any worse? they used them on the metro turbos i believe..

you could always give the honda disc conversion a go, from all reports they give great stopping and are cheap too :)

Then all's at fault is your brake booster, if it leaks take it off for a rebuild. The brakes are still pretty serviceable without it. Infact the guy whos advertising his rod change? Cooper S? in the for sale forum doesnt seem to have one installed judging by the photos and seems quite happy without it. The booster doesnt actualy help you stop better, just makes it easier on you.

What pads do you have in the S calipers?
I'm running EBC Greenstuffs with NO booster, and new RDA discs, it stops pretty well, even on the track.
And straight too- unlike all the drum systems I've had.. :x

I paid $93 over the web.
Just looked at EBC's new site and it's a POS now- lots of dealers but I can't find a `buy' link.

If you buy from the dealers, they will rip you off, like $150+.....

<EDIT> Here's the link- http://www.autospeed.com/shop/category_632/browse.html

p/n for `S' EBC greenstuffs is DP2101 8) price now is $116.60

I bought some Street Kevlars(were called Blackstuffs) too, for the wife's Mini- not tried them yet. p/no is DP101.
They are way cheaper, were $55 approx, but now $87.95
