I had been having alot of trouble gotting the mini into gear and eventually found the slave cylinder was leaking alot. I've replaced this with a new one and it was alot better but would still be a little engaged with my foot on the clutch. A local mini place suggested that the masters shagged it so I got a new seal kit to rebuild the master. I haven't had a chance to do that yet and it's starting to get harder to get into gear, but more worrying is the huge shudder when taking off or changing gear but it disappears by 3rd 4th, which only appeared yesterday.

I was wondering if the shudder is related to the master cylinder dying or could it be drive shafts or something. I was worried about my drive shaft but don't think it's that as I'd then expect the shudder all the time not just when dis-engaging the clutch.

Any help is appricated.

if youve improved the slave cylinder and it got a little better, then my bet is that you should follow up with that issue. dont go chasing other queries that youre not sure of.

the shudder might be a leak in your cylinder, it doesnt keep the compression when you depress the clutch

That's what I was thinking, I was just getting paranoid.

I'm going to rebuild the master this weekend and see how I go.

just out of curosity, how do you rebuild a master cylinder?

ive heard of "resleeving" a cylinder (engine, brake and clutch), thats impregnating the walls with more metal

how do you do it yourself with a kit?
good luck with it

I was just replacing all the seals, if the actual cylinder is scored then I guess you'd need to do more, maybe "resleaving" or the like.

I hope the seals will be enough.

Master cylinder rebuilds are easy, well for a professional. just takke the cylinder down to a specialist, not even a mini specialst,(cheaper if it isn't) and get them to put the kit through it, shouldn't cost you more than $30 or so. You may find that the reason your getting shudder is one of three things, master cylider, as you have already mentioned, air in the system, try rebleeding the slave cylinder or you clutch is slipping due to excessive strain from your slave cylinder being cactus. But i doubt it is the last one.

Cheers

Aaron

I've already replaced the slave and bleed the clutch (ie no air) so that still sugests the master. Will do the master and hope for the best.

If the clutch is dragging (it sounds like it) maybe you are using a brake MC instead of a clutch one. The bore of the clutch MC is 0.750", whereas most brake ones are 0.700". They will fit, but don't move enough fluid to free the clutch properly..

ps. I've been caught with this on a couple of cars...

It's quite possible oil may be getting on the friction plate of the clutch, this will cause it to become grabby. This is caused by the main bearing seal leaking. But I wouldn't suggest doing any more than having a gander for oil leaks at the bottom of the clutch housing.

I'd be following the advice of the other guys, and check for air getting in the system (Master Cylinder, Slave Cylinder) before going any further.

If the master was leaking the when you changed the slave you presumably rebled the system - short term solution, not the master starts leaking again and air gets back in.
I'd suggest checking for leaks in the hydraulic hose and the master. Maybe replace and dubious bits with a known good bit to check before buying.

I've now re-sealed the master and the shudder is still there, she also seems to be leaking a bit of oil where the gear selector connects to the gearbox. But it probably burns more oil than that anyway. God, the cheap run around is becoming a constant problem, argh what have I gotten myself into.

I will try that, I had done an oil change and filter (oil and air) I can't remember but I thought I'd done the sparks but can't remember. I'll have a look at them tommorrow.
