A few questions as always.

That special mini exshaust clamp - the one made up of two semi circles with brass nuts - is it only for standard exhaust connections or should it go on a Cooper S 3into 1 extractors? Now whether using it or a standard 'U' clamp should it be locked tight enough to prevent any movement between the extractors and the exhaust or should there be some sliding motion possible for the extractors on the exhaust (cause I'm pretty sure there should be some movement and some gas always escapes but a carby "specialist" who was tuning my carbys kept complaining that there is a gas leak on the exhaust and he could set them up to the optimum.

Which leads us to my next question - where can I get a proper tune for the carbys and the whole exhaust system without somebody attempting to sell me stuff i dont need- the carbys were rebuilt, and tuned twice but the carby guy doesnt seem to know much about minis and wouldnt go beyound the carbys themselves, plus he cant seem to get the choke to work in a usable and controlable way, exhaust people send me to a mechanic and say that a few drops of oil under the car are a "major oil leak" so obviously they know crap all - but the whole exhaust note sounds kinda sickly - I just need somebody who understands their stuff to listen to it and tell me whats wrong - are they carby specialists in Sydney who know minis?

Try Carburettor Service Co in Parramatta Rd, Burwood. They've been there since before the Mini saw the light of day, and the guys are old enough to remember how... 8)

Yeah that split clamp is only for the common cast exhaust, not for Cooper 3 into one, freeflow or LCB.
Use a standard U-bolt pipe clamp. Should be clamped up tight, no movement. If the motor is moving look at the engine mounts or steady bar bushes.
If it hangs too low you can make a flat C clamp like I did from 25x3 flat bar and a 5/16" bolt & nut. That makes it less likely to wipe out and doesn't distort the pipe like a normal U-bolt clamp does. 8)

The clamp also depends on the style of extractors. I'm running a very common three branch extractors (similar to Cooper S, but I'm not sure if they are exactly the same). Where the link pipe fits the extractors is an interference fit - that is, no clamp - you bang it on with a hammer, and tighten the bottom exhaust mount (on to gearbox). Of course, the downside is when the bottom mount bolt falls out, a big bump might cause the system to fall down. Even just a quick gear change did it to mine - and yes, it is very LOUD! It fixed itself again on the next gear change, much to the bemusement of spectators :)

I think Anto is talking about the downpipe slip joints on Aussie LCB ones etc. They are held up by the bottom clamp bolt on the gearbox.
Is that what you mean? Only ways to fix a leak there are make new pipe section with a better fit, or stick damp muffler putty around it as you assemble it.

In my post above I thought you meant the bottom joint, where the front pipe goes over the extractors...??

I ment the joint behind the engine block where the 3 into 1 extractors enter the single exhaust pipe.

"the one made up of two semi circles with brass nuts " would go there, if you were running the stock system. My extractors have nothing there as they are an interference fit, however I do have another set of extractors that aren't, and for them I would be using the correct sized U-bolt. I'm assuming your exhaust is the latter. Preferably you don't want any exhaust leak here especially as it dirties air filter quickly, in my experience.
And no, there should not be any substantial movement at this joint, it should be quite tight (not to strangle the pipe or anything tho :) )

Anto

Here is some trivia for you... I spent the weekend with one half of the duo that established that company. He is now the head of Webber sales in Aust. Very handy contact
