Post subject:  Small air compressors and sand blasting

I spent yesterday sandblasting surface rust with a small air compressor and a $20 Bunnings sand blasting attachment. The main areas I was concentrating on were in the engine bay, where no sandpaper can reach!

I am impressed with the way it cleans up surface rust. Mine also removes paint fairly easily, but the paint is very thin. It's worth the effort.

People will always bag the small compressors and sand blasters, but if you haven't got big $$$, like a lot of us, then it's the way to go!

It didn't take long at all. The only thing that made it slower than normal was having to stop to let the lil compressor rest every now and then. Otherwise I would burn it out.

For those hard to reach spots the sandblaster was worth its weight in gold!

I did some more last night. Sucessfully sand blasted some rust along the bottom of a door. Trying to scrape it off with a screwdriver was no where near as good as ripping into it with the sand blaster!

After sandblasting ANYTHING, you'll see that corrosion (surface rust, oxides) will appear within days if you dont treat it again. I've seen magnesium corrode from my thumbprint, after I sandblasted a wheel. You could actually watch it etching the material.
