The early ones I'd guess are fairly similar to UK and Aussie spec. Over time they added more local content like Australia did.

The later 1100 & 1275 engine used the rwd type block with the higher mounted oil filter. The 1100 engine was a destroked 1275 block with a different crank and pistons among other things. Something a bit like this:

Thanks Timmy, I see that they used the riveted plates for ID's as well. I was just tawling throught the interwebs and saw a few 1275's for sale and wondered if anyone went down that route.

Does anybody know what the actual stroke was on these SA 1100s?
Did they use the same stroke as the 1071 S to give a 1071cc capacity 1100 or did they use a different stroke again to get 1098cc with the big bore block?

SA1100 had a stroke of 69.85mm – as opposed to the 68.26mm of the 1071cc Cooper S.

Apparently there were two different castings with the same part number, one was 69.8mm and the other 70mm (according to mk1-forum). They have imported quite a few into the UK.

Have you built many engines with them? How do you like them?

No mate not yet. I imagine they would be like what a 998 is to an 1100. I like 998s.
The A series is most efficient in the short stroke form, so I'd like to see a 73.5 or 74mm bore with one of these cracks, well that's the plan.

Being from South Africa and with recent talks to a patient of mine, importing from SA has its dangers. This is a first world country rapidly falling into a 3rd world country. Things happen differently over there. More often than not somebody needs to get their cut or you won't get your stuff. My patient brings in the South African equivalent of a Monaro and XW falcons. He has had 2 cars go "Missing" in the last 6 months. Seems they were loaded on the boat but when the boat docked there was no record of the containers being loaded. If you are prepared to take the risk of losing your money it may be worth a punt.
