Howdy,

Well, been driving Jenna to work for a while now and things are sweet as. Goes like a rocket, bags of fun and easy drive.

This morning, I started her up and drove to work, when I got in the office, the guy next to me goes "Man you smell like fuel!"
This has never happened before... same fuel I always use, and same drive in... I did have much more traffic today, so sat there idling for much longer at times, but nothing like this has happened before.

Window was closed most of the time, except I opened it for a little bit ... I have a centre exit with the tip cut downwards, the rear windows were closed too.
Yes, there is still a hole in my firewall... which needs some grommets and stuff but ...

Anyone have any ideas, advice, experience?

Pete.

I think you are going to need to start your engine and have a look around first Peter, maybe a hose is leaking or the carb

A fuel smell almost always means a fuel leak somewhere - what carby and air filter do you have ??? Sometimes a stub will give a fuel stand off !

Ah, no air filter at the moment, and Its a HS6.
Ill have a good look around... but it smells like fuel when I start the car (like fuel from exhaust) but there is no smoke, etc.

I have not driven her for about 4 days...

Peter.

Read vizards book, partiuclarly the bit about the fuel stand off. I think its in Vizard. An air filter traps the stand-off but still, dont disregard leaks.

I thought all minis smell of petrol - atleast the ones with a sidedraught - I've complained about the petrol smell in the past but GR and others have told me its just natural with a sidedraught.

my 2 cents.........

Look for any staining on the carby body or inlet manifold. If so it migh need a new carby gasket(s)?

Under heavy load after standing still (like in heavy traffic) it simply leaks out. On cooler days it wont evaporate like on a hot summer day and you will get a stronger fuel smell.

Yeah, I think sidedraught do... but I have an SU and it never happened before... now its pretty bad... so 'something' has happened... just need to find out what.

haha - no, I dont smoke.

Thanks Mike, ill look at the filtration and also look for any places its leaking... I need to clean the engine bay anyhow... so now ill clean it nicely and look for traces of fuel...

Pete.

Check to see if fuel float leaks. It used to happen on one of my twins. The float valve in the fuel bowl would not seal properly. Even though through testing seemed fine (take off and blow thru, then close the valve and can't blow thru anymore, fuelk pressure (3psi) just was too much).

But on long idles it over fuelled, after driving your car, lift the bonnet and look at the float chamber, is there fuel around the top of it?

I had fuel and engine smells in cabin until I put the Smiths PCV valve back on. It's connected to both ports on the Weber manifold. No stinks now...
They may not be as Bling as a K&N toy filter on the breather, but they work. I don't seem to have any power loss either!
PCV gets replaced by a catch tank for circuit work, only takes me 5 mins to swap it all.

OK,

So I looked before I left. No fuel ANYWHERE in engine bay leaking
Started her up, no smell
Drove home, no smell
Got home, popped the bonnet, no leaks... hmm

It was much shorter drive home, because there was no traffic.

Pete

Kev, you talking about that pipe from the crank case breather to the carb??
I have put that on, been on for about 2 weeks of driving, maybe 3

Pete.

Mine goes to the manifold, yours to the smog vac port on the SU carb. They both do the same job but the PCV valve sucks better. 8)
