Post subject:  Rear wheel brake cylinder

Just purchased replacement wheel cylinders and notice that next to the bleed nipple is a hole with what appears to be some sort of split sleeve sticking out a few mm. The old cylinders have the hole but are empty. The split sleeve (or whatever it is) stops the cylinder from sitting flush. Do I remove it? If not how do I get the cylinder to sit flush so the retaining clip will go in.

I've done a search on the forums but found zip on this problem.

Any advice?

TIA

Dave

Its a locating dowel. Keep it.

What does it locate into? There is no corresponding hole in the brake backing plate?

Nope. Hole for the bleed nipple and one for the brake line connection. That's it. The car is a 1962 850 if that makes any difference.

Make a hole with a drill - The backing plate is only pressed sheet metal. It stops the cylinder moving around inside the brake drum.
