Hi

I noticed this before when I bought the mini, I was thinking before might be just the brake pads...

but today I drove the mini down the road to test and it sounds more like a squeeky rubber/tyre fouling something, but had a good look under and the wheels/tyres doesnt hit anything or anything close to it to make such a noise.

The noise is always there more evident when slowing down or rolling the car like on 15+kph

just wondering if you can tell from this pic if my pad is worn out from this pic...

Anyone had the same issue before? what can be worn out or something wrong with the mini?

Squeak might be your knuckle joints? Is the car straight when parked on flat surface?

If its a "rubbery" kind of sound my tip is the wheel bearings. Is the drive shaft nut tight, really tight, 150ft/lbs tight?

i have a similar sound aswell, but i know its not knuckle or bearing, because i just got those things done at link, my car does sit reall low but its not tyre rub.....i think i might get some of that brake cleaner in a can crap, it sounds rotor related. i have brand new disc's and pads......damn i love english cars

If you have glazed brake pads you can get a very strange (and scary) groaning noise under braking. :shock:

The Knuckle joints will give you a squeeking/groaning noise when they go. A short term fix/way to diagnose is to spray some lithium grease into the nylon cup area, if the noise goes away then it's them!! Replace soon or they'll bugger your top arms.

Is the noise in synch with the wheel revolving? like goes faster with increased speed?

May help you to diagnose?

Yes the noise is in synch with the wheel revolving the noise goes faster when the wheels/car is moving faster.

Too many moons ago I had a 1986 Mini City (in the UK) and I had a noise which I think was the one you are referring to.

It turned out to be rust on the discs (rotors). You say that there is rust on the edge but not on the faces. The centre of the disc will almost certailny have rust as well, where the flange joins the disc and on mine this had spread a little so that the inner edge of the pad rubbed on it when the wheel was rotating.

Not a major problem, but irritating. I eventually replaced the discs and it was fixed :D

He's talking about that big 1-5/16" A/F nut in the middle of the drive flange.
It should be 150 lb/ft with disc brakes (except 997-998 Cooper), then tighten to the next split pin hole.
