Post subject:  Is yours as stiff as mine?

 Howdy,

I have my '76 clubbie and the heater controls are STIFF STIFF STIFF.
I can push the HOT WARM COLD from left to right a little (it will go from Hot to Warm but no chance in hell to get it to cold.

The SCREEN to CAR is also as stiff.

I dont want to rip it apart yet, unless I know its mine and not everyones.

Cheers,
Peter.

Ahhh
Well to rank the stiffness is easy for me.
The on/of switch is easy, just a flick, the screen/car/and one other switch is quite hard, but can move easy enough with 2 fingers.
But the hot/warm/cold switch generally requires 2 hands to get it to move all the way along. Although i don't use the heater or demister in this warm part of the world, it would be annoying if i wanted to.
So thats a 2nd stiff,
my heater is in a 72 clubby, so i dunno if that would be any different at all to your/,

Hot-warm-cold = no chance (heater tap removed)

Off-screen-car = stiff!

My heating works ok... in fact if I drive long enough I get WAY too hot... and have to open windows!

OK, my mission (after the first 37 I have begun) is to make the heater controls smooth and easy... (I wonder if they EVER were on a Mini)

Any first owners in the house :)

I bought a swing arm heater tap that bolts onto the head from ebay out of the UK. Took off the hard to use and very corroded heater tap that is standard in a clubman.

I took the heater out of the the car and took out the heater core and gave it a dip in a cleaning substnace and gave it thoruogh flush unil it ran clean.

I then ran NEW heater hoses from the heater core to the head and the heater return point on the lower radiator hose.

The heater temp control mechanism is coiled up out of the way under the dash and now that it is disconnected, the lever moves fine with no real pressure needed to move it.

The heater control is under the bonnet and although it requires lifting the bonnet to adjust the heat it is not a hard job to do. I did free up the lever arms for the car/demister/off actions at the same time and scrounge some better tubing to the vents and from the air point in the engine bay. Works well now and we had a monster cold morning yesterday.

just get rid of the tap altogther and plum the pipes directly to the heater, its just another place for water to leakout or as you have the switch to stuff up.
The only time you will get heat this way is when you have the fan on anyway..and during the hotter months it helps to cool the engine down just that little bit more.
If my wife don't complain for 3 years you wont have a problem either

yeah its 100% certain the original heater tap will rust up or fill with gunk. the solution is easy, you just remove the heater tap and plumb the tube straight through, or you could replace the heater tap with say a plastic one and replace the cable with a nice new one and it would be easy to push.

My SCREEN CAR switch is easily enough movable but the HOT WARM COLD isn't. Slight movement between HOT and WARM but doesn't goto COLD. This is good enough for the moment as its winter. But my car will be off the road soon and there's a load of little adjustments I have listed for the next 9 months. Off course although saying that I'm still going to have it out on the road once so often to make sure nothing ceases. Otherwise the next 9 months will be soild tickering, adjusting and replace/fixing things to bring it up to scratch.

Finally solved the bugger.

So I left this a long time ago thinking ill get to it one day. And I did!
Engine is removed, and while I was removing and respraying the engine bay... I was also pulling out many of the things under the dash.

While I was there I noticed cable ties everywhere... keeping things neat.
Well, I tried pushing the heater controls to the right and they get stuck on the CABLE TIE!!!!

Pfft, SNIP and cable tie gone.... HOLY COW !!! The control goes smoothly all the way to the right.

Guys, check underneath and see if there is anything getting caught in the mechanism... thats my whole problem... and its gooooone now :)
