Ok so it's driving me insane. Where do i buy these flares from, over the counter? I would like new, as most second hand sets ive seen have been quite the shit-ness. Any info appreciated. The car is due back from the painters in a bit over a month so i'd like to get everything to him by the end of the week(ish) Cheers, Will. |

Weren't flares a dealer option on the Mk1 in aus? I'm guessing they were the same as Mk2 flares? |

I'm guessing they were the same as Mk2 flares? Yeah i thought this also, which is why i called them Mk1 flares in the first place. I also recall that they didnt fit them to the early Mk1s, but later on were all fitted to the late Mk1s. Probably wrong tho... Mk2 came in standard and WIDE widths im also pretty sure on.. |

i heared they were an option on mk1s but have no idea. I am used to seeing the wide ones, as on GT;s and shite. I like the wide ones personally and i disagree with the pirates comment.. I have been dealing with John Schmidt at mini spares or whatever they call it now. He and his business is an assett to the mini scene, and i hope that people support them and dont judge them on a few stray comments. I dont go there to suppport northern mini spares in the slightest. but the range of advice and NOS that John has there is amazing and well worth preserving ![]() |

These flares were not generally fitted on Mk1s, except in SA where the gestapo insisted on them. ![]() |

Part of the reason that so many Mk 1's had them fitted was because of the law at the time. The police (NSW included) were pretty hot on "illegal" modifications and wheels and tyres that protruded beyond the body line were "illegal" modifications. The original 145 (4.5 inch) cooper rims stayed within the bodyline but most of the mag wheels of the time and widened wheels were five inchs or more and protruded past the bodyline. The flare (flair) kits were readily available and were a cheap option against a defect notice. Remember that in 1966 plus these Coopers were the ultimate in pocket rockets and were the then HSV commodore equivalents. In 1972 one of my younger brothers owned the castrol mini driven by Hopkirk in 1966 at Bathurst and by then it had had flares retrofitted and probably by BMC to make it street legal. |

willy, like most things in life you get what you pay for. ![]() Padstow are a great place for all hard to get parts, and are generally pretty damn good when it comes to offering advice and customer service, even years after they sold you the product. If you want to compare prices, make sure you do it on the same quality of part, not cheap ass chinese copies I know some other sydney retailers sell. You also shouldn't listen to everything you here especially on forums. Most people who bad mouth other places (as you just did) have no actual experience in dealing with them and are not therefore qualified to judge. As Czerial said, they are worth supporting as true mini supporters and fellow mini nuts! And nice guys too. </rant> Have a nice day ![]() Matt |
