Post subject: | fueling question |
Hi all. I have a little issue with my fueling that has me stumped... Eg: Say i'm in 2nd, and I gas up, to lets say 4500rpm. As the revs catch up to the trottle position (ie the revs aren't going to go any higher unless i open the trottle further) she starts to miss. if i back off or throttle up she smooths out and then is all good. I have also noticed this starting to happen under load going up a hill. This is all happening to a 998 with 1100 crank, running single 1.5su, sports filter and an exaust that is someware beetween an lcb and a standard. I have tryed a few things but will leave them unlisted because i would like to gather a few first impretions. Any ideas would be apretiated..... thank you |

Sounds like ignition to me - maybe points setting or flutter, condensor or the like or leads breaking down. Particularly when you mention "under load" |

Yeah...sounds like timing related....what sort of fuel are you using?? ![]() |

Premium 98. if they have it. I was putting a lead addative in, but was told not to bother. I have changed the points recently, But will check the gap again. With the going up hills bit,(reflecting on my earlier statement) It is still more like, once the revs start to catch the throttle, than under load. that it starts to break away. |

Well to me, the points are the prime suspect ![]() I would be checking and double checking their installation and adjustment....new points can be dud or you may have bumped or broken something in that area....closely followed by a timing check ![]() |

Have you checked the oil in the carb dashpot ![]() |

feralsprint The oil in the dashpot. Is something that i have tryed to work out more times than i care to think about. There seems to be a lot of information about on it but i am not 100% that i have the right bit. I have mixed handy oil and motor oil, at a 2 part handy to 1 part motor. Taken the air filter of, and put oil in the dashpot untill the piston has resistance from the bottom of the stroke. There is a small amount of play at the bottom of the stroke that can not be taken up no matter how much oil i put in i am assuming that this is meant to be.. I havent checked the points again yet but will do. |

OK now you have me a little worried, why did you remove the air cleaner to put dashpot oil in, did you remove the black flat plastic knob from the top of the dash pot( top of carb) remove damper and place oil down the top, just enough to feel slight reistance when you push the piston back in and screw it back down ![]() |

I take of the air filter, So that after putting oil in to the dashpot, and screwing the cap and damper back on. I can lift the piston from through the inlet side of the carb to check for resistance. Do you recomend filling the oil until the the damper on the bottom of the cap has resistance on the way back in? As opposed to lifting the piston? Because if i do it that way, there is a small amount more oil that goes in.... Yesterday i cleaned the plugs again, changed leeds, put a new gasket on the pushrod cover plate's (on the back of small bore motors) and put a little more oil in the dashpot. This has eliviated the the problem for the moment. but now on the way home from work i think i did my bottom hose to the radiator. So i will fix that and patiently wait for the missing to start again. Ahhh to own a mini. |

Mate The lift pin is for checking the idle mixture and as you found out if you put a little more oil in the dash pot the miss as you call it goes away, this is because the oil helps to stop the flutter of the piston which is the sympton I think you are describing about constatnt revs Jon |

ok. So i should check the oil level on the damper not the piston. Sounds fair. Cheers for that. I have read a good 4 or 5 diferent ideas on setting up su's and none of them have been clear to me as to where you were ment to check the resistance. Thanks again. I managed to change the bottom hose this arvo so i'll see how it goes tomorow. |
