a while ago i replaced my original alternator (with external regulator) for one with an internal regulator because it was overcharging - putting 16v through the battery. I think in the end it might have just been a problem with the wire to the regulator but anyway now i've got problems with the 'new' one and wondered if its possible to buy these brand new. A couple of places seem to be selling the later (i think) type with the plastic shroud on the back but i'm guessing that would mean relocating the coil which i didn't want to do. so anyone know if they're available new?? or is reconditioning the only option... and how much???
the problem with the one in there now is that its only putting about 13v through the battery and the alternator light on the dash stays on slightly so i'm expecting it to die soon...

thanks
G

Just about any auto electrician will rebuild (recondition) either of your alternators and charge you about $80 - $100 to do it.

There are, of course, alternators off later model cars that have higher out puts that can be made to fit and are sometimes necessary with high output stereos and or driving lights but if you want to stay standards have yours reco'ed.

These alternators were also used on some fords of the 70's vintage. When i last needed an alternator, I went to my local (rural) wreckingyard and they took me to a bin full of alternators and just told me to dig through the several hundred until i found a couple that looked right. Then they said they would test them - price $20 !!!!
