I've recently had the head machined, and just about to reinstall the head but before I do wanted to check on a couple of things. I dropped the oil before removing the head (probably not needed in hindsight), and so I'm conscious of potential issues with getting oil pressure thru the pump. Do I need to anything specific to prime the oil pump? I have seen recommendations to crank without the spark plugs for 30/40 seconds until pressure shows on the gauge. Also, should I pour a tablespoon or so of oil into the chamber before reinstalling the head to give the rings some initial lubrication? |

No forget the oil pump, unless it's been standing for a year or more. Just crank it with plugs out until you get pressure. You can put a spot of oil in first, won't hurt, but not necessary. Retighten the head and adjust the valves when hot. I would repeat after 500-1000 miles. |
