Post subject:  Clearance issue - lower radiator bracket to crank pulley

Hi all,

I’ve had some problems with the radiator bracket bolt (the rear one that goes horizontally into the bottom of the cowl) hitting on the crankshaft pulley

I have a factory 1100 damper pulley and what I assume are the factory 850 radiator brackets and shroud. The only way I’ve been able to get around the problem is by holding the radiator away as far as possible while doing up the bolts. This seems to work most of the time, but a few weeks ago I hit a big pothole and the brackets must have shifted a little and the pulley started rubbing on the bolt

Is there a better combination of lower/upper radiator brackets that give more clearance? Did any of the later bolts have a shorter head? I’ve added some extra photos below of what I’ve got now in case there’s something that’s obviously mismatched

I've left that rear bolt out for 30 years. No problems.
It's important to be able to replace the fan belt when on the road without having to jack it up etc.

Thanks Kev

I’ve done some more looking this morning and found:
Mine is the 22A29 bracket
The 12A293 gives more clearance for the damper
There’s a different lower cowling to suit

Minisport gives a good description of the issue I’m having

There are different lower shrouds too.

The situation with these brackets and shrouds is amazingly complicated. What it appears to boil down to is that the parts pictured by Tim are the original 850 parts, but these are only good for the narrow crankshaft pulley. To use the thick pulley, you need both the bracket with the extra bend, and the corresponding lower shroud. The lower shrouds ARA1149 (850) and AYA2119 (Deluxe) (and ARA1342 for Cooper) look superficially similar but the L brackets carrying the weld nuts points the opposite way.

Hi Timmy, I had exactly this problem in my 850 when I fitted an 1100 with the big harmonic balancer. I did try using bolts with the heads machined thinner. However the proper solution was to swap the lower bracket and lower rad cowling for the 1100 1275 type. That gives plenty of clearance.
