Post subject: | Remote gear lever freeplay |
I have been trying to remove excess freeplay in the gearshift travel of a remote setup on my 1970 S. I bought a new nylon bush (22G389) that fits to the small ball-end of the gear lever and stops it from rattling in the toggle end of the selector shaft. Attachment: 22G389 Antirattle bush gear lever.jpg But the new bush doesn't look like what is on the gear lever. Attachment: IMG_0071.jpg Is there anything wrong with the old bush/spring arrangement? Like, should the spring be projecting beyond the bush? Or should the spring be inside or outside of the bush? The new bush has a tapered end but the original one doesn't. Has the tapered end been worn away, allowing the spring to show? Or has the new bush shape replaced the earlier shape? |

G'day Bill. The new bush you purchased appears correct for Part No. 22G389, but Australian cars are fitted with AYA3057 which has a different taper on it and interior shape. A cross section of AYA3057 is in the Cooper S drawings book which I am sure you, and all fastidious Cooper S owners, have handy. Regards Tony |

I am sure you know this but there is an anti rattle brass plunger and spring in the side of the housing behind a hex headed retainer. |

It's been a while since I looked but I think you'll find the spring sits on top of the bottom ball not under it. Its then compressed by the top plate that retains the lever... Cheers, Ian |

Please note, the plunger (which may or may not have a hole through it depending on whether a grease nipple is fitted to the cap (- approx 1967) is made from bronze, not brass. |

In my experience the lever mostly develops a rattle when the split nylon bush atop the big ball gets worn enough to sit on the housing. A new bush fixes it but if unavailable I have machined new ones in the past. |

Thanks to Bill's enquiry, I've found a drawing of the asssembly. It hasn't survived very well, but still might be readable. Regards Tony |

IMHO it doesn't matter how new or well installed the standard system is. It was a standard part of the build spec for the works rally cars to fit the anti rattle rubber sleeve... There is a better solution ![]() Cheers, Ian |

Ok, I’ll bite. Is the better solution fitting a rod change box ? Btw. Could you provide details on the anti rattle rubber sleeve ? Not something I’ve come across.. |

It’s a piece of rubber hose slipped over the gearstick I normally have one fitted as my magic wand rattles really bad |

Attachment: IMG_2625.JPG Here's one I prepared earlier. Shown to me by a pre war Morris apprentice (somewhat later in life:) He sold me the bit which he identified as a "Morris Minor front trunnion bush". If you change to a Quikshift you can replace it with a piece of heater hose but there's little trial and error to get the length right. Obviously, once installed, absolutely invisible in case of originality anoraks. Cheers, Ian |

They also added in on the top side (especially on the earlier one piece levers) |

It is a while since I drove a remote shift but I remember it being very positive gear changes and no rattles. I still have the shift and will look at it tomorrow to see how it is set up. I remember thnking it did not need.a.quickshift unlike most rod change shifters. |

I remember thnking it did not need.a.quickshift unlike most rod change shifters. That's how I think about them too. My mini K (remote shift) has a light click-click shift that is the best I've known. Rod change boxes develop massive wear and long gearshift movements. I don't have "rattle" or "zizz" noises to eliminate - just looking for an easy, light and precise gearchange. I would be interested to know what you find regarding the nylon bush and small spring setup, and what the nylon bush looks like. Photos please. |

I will do when out in the shed today. I wonder if the actual fork or the knuckle type joints at the gearbox end can develop play? |
