Why is there a time factor in oil change frequencies as well as a distance. Surely oil does not deteriorate appreciably over time.

I guess it depends what extended period of time you’re talking about. If you put in a decent oil and were using it once a month for a decent drive to burn the condensation out then having it for a few years should be ok

If you’re getting a car going that’s had the oil sitting in it for 10 years and you’re planning on using it frequently, then change the oil.

If an oil change is $50 with a filter it’s a better option than running an engine with unknown condition oil or a clogged up oil filter

Yes, sage advice from Tim as usual.
It never used to bother me until I put the classics on club plates. Now the time period always expores way before the distance. I dont mind spending on oil and filters but changing out oil that looks and smells like new I do mind about.
I think the key is to apply some common sense.

I manage to fill the 60 days logbook every year. The oil gets changed at 6 months and the spin on filter at 12.
The oil is nowhere near black, but fresh oil is the best insurance for a hotted up A series.
18 years since rebuild, oil pressure is 60 idle 75 running, hot. No cooler now.
Gulf Western 20W50.
I've just now replaced the worn gearbox layshaft but haven't touched the engine bearings.
Layshaft runs a bronze bush now, not the POS small needle bearing.
I've done this mod before on my son's Mini.
