I have tried to repair / replace worn pins etc on a couple of cars and I now live with slightly worn hinges as I made such a hash the last 2 times. Maybe with the i fo here I will have anothrr go, or maybe not.

Hello Have to refurbish the external hinges on my clubman. Have bought replacement pins and bushes. Any advice on best way to go about it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Birdie |

Probably best to do one at a time so you don't get the hinges mixed up or take note of the hinge position and markings on the back. They are not hard to do if you have a vise. A carved out block of wood can also help to support the hinge and keep the pin perpendicular. Here are some pics. Attachment: 1. Pin removal using a carved out wooden block.jpg Attachment: 2. I use similar method, except I made the support block from aluminium and I made a shoulder punch to fit the bush. Bush is 5/16" OD. Sintered bronze. Note if the pin has worn right through the bush into the hinge, the hinge is now scrap. Unless you drill the hinge out to say 9.0mm and get an oversized bush machined up. I used LG2 bearing bronze for this. |

I found the replacement pins had different splines to the original pins. |

On the last set I did, one of the new bushes fell apart when reaming it. Quality new parts. |

Genuine Rover Bushes are still available, I did a set not long ago and had Zero issues with bushes or pins. |

My theory is the spline was perhaps changed so that the new pin would lock into the hinge better. Second theory- Chinese made since and the supplier doesn't care. |

The splined area is also longer because you need to linish it flush with the upper surface of the hinge once it is seated, you remove at least half that length on one side of the pin as the hinges are not 90 degrees to the pin. The originals would have started out the same. |

The markings can be different from above, using a 2 letter code UR meaning upper right etc |
