Post subject: | LED upgrade - Mini K |
As a motorbike rider, I value the importance of being seen on the road... and given my Mini K is daily driven... I really would like to upgrade some of my lights... parkers / indicators / tail lights etc. Interested in recommendations for LED upgrades for these lights. I love the original look of the Mini.. so I want the lights to be warm coloured and not so obnoxiously bright. The lights I'm looking to replace are: -Front indicators / parkers (BAY15D) -Rear stop / tail light (BAY15D) -Rear indicators (BA15S) -Rear numberplate (BA9S) -Interior light -Possibly the dash lights too I've only just upgraded the headlights to halogen with a relay, and so far they seem pretty good (country road driving between Rylstone and back to the hotel at Mudgee might be the proper test) |

For the front indicator/parker I’d recommend the switchback LED bulbs as they are amber for the indicator and white for the parking light. I used some 1157 switchback led bulbs, along with a Tridon HD13 electronic flasher unit. No wiring changes were needed, just install the bulbs and flasher Parking lights are white Indicators are amber If you have the parking lights on, then turn on the indicator, the parking light goes out Eg https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/393157857659 |

Will these work with Narva Flasher Electronic 12V 3 Pin 68213BL? |

I don't think it's as loud as a stock one, but it's loud enough to hear over my engine and exhaust combo cooperess wrote: Will these work with Narva Flasher Electronic 12V 3 Pin 68213BL? That looks like a "non load" flasher unit which is a similar spec to the one I used. I kept the incandescent bulbs on the back, LED on the front and mine flashes at the correct speed. |

I have the same setup. Clicking sounds the same and speed is same as with bulbs but not as loud as the original tin can ones. |

Barkfast I'm like you; desperate to be seen. And its not ego. I fitted a high, centre brakelight on the back parcel shelf. It is nearly at eye level for other drivers and much brighter than the original brake lights. I like the yellow look of incandescent bulbs; to me, they are right for an old car. I have a pair of old spots, wired with 10 watt halogen bulbs as daytime running lights. The rules for DRL's say that they must turn off (with relays) when the headlights are turned on. For an everyday driver you might be right about leds. DONT replace the generator light with an LED. Dave D |

They aren't exactly dim so I don't really believe LEDs will help. The same bulbs were used on much newer vehicles with larger lenses. LEDs will be brighter but does it make a difference? Probably not. Fitting a high level brake light is what I believe is the best option, anything that increases the height should massively increase the chance of being seen. I was stopped at lights in a modern vehicle towing an "equipment yellow" trailer with LED lights. I was about to take off when someone ran into the back of the trailer. I have also been hit in a mini too. I could've had the biggest brightest lights and I'm sure neither of these drivers would've seen me. I'd also advise against fitting LED dash lights. If you fit brighter dash lights then your eyes adjust to them and then need brighter headlights. That's just my opinion, you can do what you want. The one thing I'd never consider fitting is LED headlights. |

Thanks for everyone's thoughts... I do like the parcel shelf brake light idea but maybe down the track - possibly something like https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3824817 For now, I've ordered some cheap LED lamps from Ali - came to around $20 landed for all of them, so worth a try. These are what i went with: -Front indicators/parkers https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005620235171.html -Rear indicators https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006888457498.html -Rear tail / brake https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005398025814.html I'll provide an update once they're fitted. |

Can you get tailight / brake light bayonet LEDs for 1969 Mini for the rear? |

cooperess wrote: Can you get tailight / brake light bayonet LEDs for 1969 Mini for the rear? I bought a pair of red ones they didn't work unless I pushed the bulb sideways. So I tried them in my 97 Jeep, didn't work unless I undid them 10° and held them. They're Asian made rubbish. In the bin now. |

cooperess wrote: Can you get tailight / brake light bayonet LEDs for 1969 Mini for the rear? Of course. You can find them as BAY15D LED or 1157 LED You can get clear/clear like a factory bulb Or you can get red/red If you have the standard red rear lenses you'd want the clear ones |

Thanks timmy201 Are the clear/clear BAY15D LED two different intensities and the red/red 1157 LED two different intensities? |

BAY15D and 1157 are the same thing, just different naming conventions If you have a red bulb and red lense it can produce a lower amount of light than white light behind a red lense This test says the opposite and you should use red bulbs and a red lense, so I guess it depends on the specific bulbs https://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/blog/ ... -red-lens/ |
