| Post subject: | Subframe coatings |
I'm almost at the stage where I have to get the subframes in my mini coated. Now the local powder coater may be closing soon, so I may have to look at other alternatives. Has anyone used products like POR-15 or KBS Coating over powder coating? |

I'd just paint them. Even the original paint seems to last well. I've seen a couple of different KBS products fail in other applications. Despite being applied in one case by "Professionals", I could scratch it off in flakes with my fingernail. As far as I'm concerned, any KBS or POR-15 products are just marketing rubbish. |

We used KBS (chassis coater kit) on 3 chassis for our group Clubman 7 builds. We only had a problem with one chassis when leaving too much time before applying the optional top coat, which didn't key properly on some tubes (missed a couple of sides of a couple of tubes and tried to apply next day - easy enough to do, see pics). We just scuffed it back and re-applied the top coat to affected tubes . After 6 years, no problems with any of them. Having said above, I have sand blasted my mini sub frames, etch primed and used epoxy undercoat and epoxy satin black. It was just easier to do it this way and can easily be repainted, whereas the 7 chassis is a different kettle of fish. |

I know I am pushing a dead donkey here, but I have used Dulux Metalshield undercoat (the red oxide version with zinc particles - not their grey primer) with Dulux interior/exterior satin black enamel (house paint). The results look very 'factory original' and the red oxide will not come off with normal use. I have been using this for over 30 years so I know it works - and it's about as cheap as you can do it these days. Also. it's worth dressing damage on the subframe and filing the edges of the subframe for a neater look before painting. |

Just more thoughts for you 70K1100 On front subframe do people the scratch off where the earth strap connects? ( and also under where the dizzy attaches to block) AND more for curiosity have you jotted down some measurements for squareness - particularly the rear |
