What do people use to remove the spin on type oil filter?
This is for the Mini Spares MSF166 filter.
Was looking at the folowing type tool, but which one do I buy?
The filter has 15 flutes, and is about 73mm in diameter.

Google will give you more choices than you will know what to do with. Repco has one for $20, and plenty more are on offering.

I have bought and tried just about all the tools designed for this (and some that are not). The ones i found work best on a clubman are the multigrip version or better still the vice clamp version

They work realy well.

I never use a tool to refit them, just tighten by hand.

So has anyone had any success with this style?
Looks like you could just poke it up from underneath on a 12 inch socket extension bar.
No need to remove grill, no fighting with oil cooler or spotlights mounted in the grill.

I use one of these as the previous filter had been overnighted and none of my other filter wrenches would undo it, but this worked.

It shouldn't be hard to remove. If there's enough access just stab a screwdriver (or similar) into it and turn.

The screwdriver method tends to just tear the filters these days. particularly if they are tight.

I have one like this and it’s always been able to remove tough ones

If you use a Ryco filter then they have the tool you show that fits their filter. It may fit other brand but I'm unsure which one's.

I use one of these because I run a Cooper S oil cooler.

Thanks all for the ideas.
I am after something for easy regular use on Mini's.
I think I will go with the 3 leg style.

scoop is right in that the base type wrenchs come in different sizes.

Find a filter you like and buy the matching tool. They aren't expensive and are much easier to use that the various "adjustable" types (IMHO;)

Cheers, Ian

I use this type - the packet had a listing of what filter it suits - if I remember I'll get the number off it

It does make life easier
