Post subject: | Flare width |
Hi All I have just replaced the step, sill and part of the floor panel on my S on the drivers side and want to put on wider flares to ensure I am compliant with NSW regulations on tyre coverage. I cannot seem to find flares of the right width for me that will also take the side trim,(2.5 inches) so that the tyres are covered, but the flares do not stick out too far. Can anyone tell me the width, from the mudguard, of the competition flares that are available from minisport? BMC MINI WIDE COMPETITION FLARE SET- HYL3942 KIT Bazzz |

I got some Group2 race flares from OldSkool Minis to cover my 6 x 10 chromed Minators, they have a lip on them for the strip if you want to fit it but with my wheels this made the flares stick out too far above the wheels. So I cut the lip off the flares and the edge of the flare now lines up exactly with the side of the tyre. With the lip the flares were 80 mm wide at the front and 75 mm at the rear. |

If no-one can answer this I suggest you call Minisport and ask for the width of the front and rear backing strips at their mid-point. https://minisport.com.au/products/bmc-c ... s=e&_v=1.0 |

Thanks Wannabey and slide for your advice. I have found these Mini 'works' copy fibreglass flares set, can keep original chrome side strip (screw on) 2.5" wide at Minisport (C-STN71) that look like they may solve my problem. Can anyone recommend them? |

Can anyone recommend them? I haven't fitted them to a car and just personally I wouldn't as they are fixed by screws into the side of the guard, a potential rust spot. Unless you are replicating a BMC Works rally car the wide BMC Australia competition flares with the metal backing strip are a much better option in my view. They retain the original style chrome side strip (see the picture of Rocky Canto's Bathurst car in the advert). https://minisport.com.au/products/mini- ... s=e&_v=1.0 |

Agree Wannabey about the rust, and also the image on the Minisport site shows them coming over the front bumper. However Minisport have just got back to me and the Competition flares are 3" wide and that extra 1/2 width compared to the fibreglass ones could make the flares look oversized which I think is not a good look. A dilema. |

Got an offer to test fit some flares that a member had lying around but I have made the leap and bought a Group 2 rally set with trim rubber. Working on fitting at present and making doubly sure the screw holes are well treated and painted. Having some trouble fitting the rubber trim, but will get there. On trial fitting they look perfect for my needs and for the look of the vehicle. Interestingly I have found when working out what size flares to buy that the rear wheel is further out on the drivers side than the passengers side. I have recently rebuilt the rear subframe completely so I am trying to workout if I did something wrong or if I need shims to adjust the frame. Will have to go back and take a look at all of those threads on subframe settings. Thanks again for the offer of a trial fit from a kind member Bazzz |

Have you had the rear toe measured? Its the only adjustable dimension at the rear (without special parts). (Excess) toe in will cause the tyre to poke out. You say you rebuilt the rear subframe... did you notice any spacers between the subframe and the suspension arm mounting bracket? Cheers, Ian |

Thanks 1071 s for the advice. I did follow the specs for the suspension arm mounting so I will be setting up for a toe in measure. Bazzz |
