Is it Ok to transfer the internals of a AYG0175 29D4 to a 40718F 23D4 distributor and use it on my Mk2 as parts for 29D4 are impossible? Any thoughts would be great. |

My thought is to install an electronic package such as the Pertronix Ignitor (which is what I have in two 29D4s). You will never need to worry about points and rotors, and caps again. Only a very trained eye can tell what I had done. I do have a spare complete 29D4 which I won't part with. I have had success with their LU-142, but I do have a spare just in case the unspeakable occurs. I have a Powerspark unit in my other car. Same deal. |

Pick whichever distributor is best for your mini. Measure the timing curve and check if it’s appropriate for your engine spec. Get it recurved if it’s not appropriate |

I doubt many of the parts other than the points/condenser are compatible. |

I think cooperess is wanting to know if the springs and weigbts can be swapped over and I cannot remember if they are the same. I know the 29D was based on the 23/25d but what is compatible I am not sure. Your car would have had a 23d at some point so finding one that matches or getting yours refurbed and graphed would be the best solution. |

I haven't had a 25/23d to compare but the 29d I believe is a larger diameter, at least the cap is meant to be. The 29d weights reach right out to the diameter of the 29d so wouldn't fit in a smaller diameter distributor. |

Is either advance curve correct for your current engine spec and the fuel you use? There’s absolutely no point in swapping in old springs unless you can measure the advance curve The factory curve on the Mk2 was noted in the period road tests for pinging which isn’t ideal |

Dr Mini was able to rebush my 29D some time ago. So it is possible to rebuild them. |

A 23d with serial number 40819 is a direct replacement for AYG0175 and has an identical curve. That would solve all your problems easily. Whether the springs and weights from a 29d will fit in a 23d is only part of your problem. If I am correct the 40718F is from an MGA and is a clockwise distributor. The A series needs an anticlockwise unit. |

I have already fitted the 23D4 40718F MGA distributor and it works. Just wondering if is Ok to install weighs & springs from my AYG0175 29D4 into 23D4 40718F. |

I’m still baffled as to why you’d want to do this? Have you measured the current advance curve of both distributors, and know that using 29d springs on a 23d will give you the correct curve? Springs are springs as far as the distributor is concerned. As long as they are the right length and strength you can use advance springs from any brand of distributor ever made. They also wear out over time and just because they were one setting 60 years ago doesn’t mean they will be the same today |

I may have rocks in my head but thought if I put the right bits in another body then it should work like the original even if they are old and worn. |
