Post subject: | Upgrading from 998 to 1275 |
Hi all My clubman will, (hopefully), be getting a 1275 in the New Year and im trying to work out what items might need upgrading to cope with the extra power. At the moment I’m running a standard 998, Mini spares Stage 1 exhaust system, 1.5 SU, electronic dizz, 7.5 disks upfront and mini fins at back. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks Eiles |

A stock 1275 should be ok with all those except the distributor needs a different curve. A 1.75" SU would be a typical upgrade though. |

The discs will be fine as will the rears. The dissy may need to be changed depending on what it is. And the 1.5 su will be fine but you will need a new needle, a AAA is a good all round 1275 needle. You may also need other ancilliaries like engine steadies, rad to tstat bracket, tstat housing and top hose and engine breather hoses etc. |

You might want to consider diff ratios. I have a mini K with a low compression 1275. Originally the mini K 3.76 diff gave really good acceleration; tried a 3.44 diff but the car lost quick pickup and didn't really get much benefit with highway driving, so went back to 3.76, which feels a lot better. Since you will have to take the motor out, it isn't too hard to change the diff ratio. |

My 850 had an 1100S engine with RE266 cam, extractors and 1-3/4” SU. I had a 2.95-1 diff and it still accelerated well and would cruise comfortably at 110 kph on the freeway (and received looks of astonishment as I went past other motorists). My daughters 850 has recently had a 1275 installed and it has a ported head, RE266 cam, extractors, lightened flywheel and runs a 3.2-1 diff. You can’t give it too much “welly” in first or second because of loss of traction, but it accelerates really well and the taller diff allows it to cruise comfortably at freeway speeds and is still nippy around the city. I would expect you will need to freshen up the gearbox unless it has already been recently done. Phil |

If you put a 3.1 diff in the Mini K gearbox you get 1-2-3 having the same ratios overall as a Mk2 Cooper S , and a taller 4th for cruising. It's a good set up. |

However, it previously had a 1-1/2” SU on the 1098 that was in the car. Phil |
