Post subject:  Romac Harmonic Balancer

Hi All
I'm installing a new Romac Harmonic Balancer to a 1969 Cooper S. Unlike the original balancer which has a lock washer to lock the crankshaft bolt to the balancer
the new Romac unit does not. Question: Is there a method of locking the crankshaft bolt to the balancer ?

Cheers

Thanks for the replies. Does anyone have experience installing the Romac Harmonic Balancer.
As I have found out that it does not slide nicely onto the crank like the original but is an interference fit.

Check for burrs on the keyway. Check also the key width if new. Some new keys from God knows where are a few thou too thick.
Balancer should slide on, neat but not interference fit.
I recently fitted 2 to new cranks.

Thanks for the info DrMini, did you fit Romac Balancers to the new cranks ?

Yes.
Before fitting a new key check it slides through the balancer. Rub on 180 paper on a machined surface untit does.
Also try fit the balancer with no key, deburr the crank with 180 paper until it does. Often there's a burr on the crank keyway.

What are the advantages over the standard Cooper S balancer (besides age) and would/should you get it balanced when getting crank/flywheel/rotating assemblies balanced ?

You can buy them. Balanced by factory.
I don't believe they need balancing when fitted. I've balanced cranks then + flywheel then + backplate then + diaphragm. Can't do harmonic balancer during this as crank nose is driven by the dynamic balancer.

Edited for clarity.

I did find fitting it to my engine in-situ it was too tight. There were some marks on the crank nose of my very much used crank, so I had to spend quite some time with emery cloth linishing just the very end to get of the crank to get the new balancer on.
